Abstract

A connector is provided that includes a housing and the housing supports a plurality of wafers. Each wafer supports a terminal and adjacent signal wafers are configured so as to provide broad-side coupled terminals. A pair of signal terminals can be surrounded on both sides by ground terminals that offer shielding so as to help isolate one signal pair from another signal pair. The geometry of the wafers can be adjusted so as to provide a tuned transmission channel. The resultant tuned transmission channel can be configured to provide desirable performance at high signaling frequencies of 12-16 GHz or even higher signaling frequencies such as 20 GHz.

Claims (18)

1. A connector, comprising:

a housing with a mount side and a mating side;

a first wafer supported by the housing, the first wafer supporting a first plurality of terminals that includes a first terminal;

a second wafer supported by the housing and positioned adjacent the first wafer, the second wafer supporting a second plurality of terminals that includes a second terminal;

a third wafer supported by the housing and positioned adjacent the second wafer, the third wafer supporting a third plurality of terminals that includes a third terminal; and

a fourth wafer supported by the housing and positioned adjacent the third wafer, the fourth wafer supporting a fourth plurality of terminals that includes a fourth terminal, wherein the first through fourth wafer are in series and the four terminals are each supported by a truss, the truss defined by edges that extend through the wafer and that are positioned on opposite sides of the respective first through fourth terminals so as to provide an air gap on both sides of the respective terminals, wherein the edges extend a majority of the distance that wafer supports the terminal, wherein the first, second, third and fourth wafers provide a ground, signal, signal, ground tuned transmission channel.

2. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the trusses extend substantially from first side of the connector to a second side of the connector.

3. The connector of claim 2 , wherein the first side is adjacent the mating side and the second side in adjacent the mounting side.

4. The connector of claim 2 , wherein the truss extends in a horizontal direction at the first side and extends in a vertical direction at the second side.

5. The connector of claim 1 , wherein each of the terminals in the first, second, third and fourth plurality of terminals are supported by a truss.

6. The connector of claim 5 , wherein two of the terminals in each of the first, second, third and fourth plurality of terminals extend to a first card slot.

7. The connector of claim 6 , wherein another two of the terminals in each of the first, second, third and fourth plurality of terminals extend to a second card slot.

8. The connector of claim 1 , wherein each of the trusses supporting the first, second, third and fourth terminals have a respective first, second, third and fourth air channel aligned with the respective terminals.

9. The connector of claim 8 , wherein the first, second, third and fourth air channels have a respective first, second, third and fourth width and the first, second, third and fourth width are not the same.

10. The connector of claim 1 , wherein there is a first dielectric constant associated with an electrical coupling between the first and second terminals, there is a second dielectric constant associated with an electrical coupling between the second and third terminals, and there is a third dielectric constant associated with an electrical coupling between the third and fourth terminals and the first and third dielectric constant are different than the second dielectric constant.

11. The connector of claim 10 , wherein the first and third dielectric constant are substantially the same.

12. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising a cage that defines at least one port aligned with the housing, the cage having a cage front and a cage rear that are on opposing sides of the cage, the housing being positioned adjacent the cage rear and spaced apart from the cage front.

13. The connector of claim 12 , wherein the housing defines a card slot and the first, second, third and fourth terminals are positioned in one side of the card slot.
