Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus for detecting at least one condition of interest relating to a tube, e.g. the presence of an air bubble. In some embodiments, the sensor includes antennas, a split-ring resonator, a frequency generator capable of generating frequencies in the microwave range, and a detection component. The detection component may estimate at least one parameter of received microwave energy in order to determine if a condition of interest exists.

Claims (28)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a raceway configured to receive a tube;

a shield configured to at least partially shield the raceway;

at least one split-ring resonator disposed within the shield and adjacent to the raceway wherein the at least one split-ring resonator is configured to vary at least one property in accordance with a presence of a bubble within the fluid flowing through the tube;

a first antenna disposed within the shield;

a second antenna disposed within the shield;

a microwave generating circuit coupled to the first antenna, wherein the microwave generating circuit is configured to generate microwave energy for transmission from the first antenna;

a receiver circuit coupled to the second antenna, wherein the microwave receiver circuit is configured to receive the microwave energy; and

a bubble detecting circuit operatively coupled to the microwave generating circuit and the receiver circuit to compare the microwave energy from the microwave generating circuit to the microwave energy received from the receiver circuit to detect a bubble within the tube, wherein the bubble detect circuit detects the bubble in accordance with the affect of the variation of the at least one property on the microwave energy.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a circuit board disposed on an outer surface of the shield, wherein the circuit board comprises the microwave generating circuit, the receiver circuit, and the bubble detecting circuit.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the bubble detecting circuit detects the bubble by using the microwave energy to determine a change in the at least one property of at least one of a group delay caused by an inner volume of the tube, a propagation delay caused by the inner volume of the tube, a group delay caused by the split-ring resonator, a phase shift caused by the split-ring resonator, a resonance frequency of the split-ring resonator, a phase angle of a test signal applied the split-ring resonator, an amplitude of the test signal applied to the split-ring resonator, a frequency response of the split-ring resonator, a frequency response within a predetermined frequency range of the split-ring resonator, a Q of the split-ring resonator, a bandwidth of a split-ring resonator, a peak of a bandwidth response of the split-ring resonator, an anti-resonance of the split-ring resonator, a phase response of the split-ring resonator, an impedance of the split-ring resonator, a propagation delay of split-ring resonant, an S11 parameter of the split-ring resonator, an S12 parameter of the split-ring resonator, an S21 parameter of the split-ring resonator, and an S22 parameter of the split-ring resonator.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a split-ring resonator of the at least one split-ring resonator is disposed within a valley of the raceway.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the split-ring resonator is concave within the valley.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a housing.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the housing includes a first antenna slit to receive the first antenna.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the housing includes a second antenna slit to receive the second antenna.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first antenna is a first split-ring resonator.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the second antenna is a second split-ring resonator.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one split-ring resonator includes a split-ring resonator electrically isolated from the first antenna and the second antenna.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one split-ring resonator includes a split-ring resonator having a plurality of interdigitated fingers formed within a gap.

13. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a housing having two legs.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein each of the two legs are configured to snap-fit into a cooperating receptacle.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an energy coupler coupled to the first antenna.
