Abstract

Devices for monitoring a sound pressure level of sound generated by a speaker. For example, the device may sample voltages at various points along a path of an audio signal, determine a current associated with the audio signal, and receive or infer an efficiency of the speaker. The device may then determine the sound pressure level based on the voltage, the current, and the efficiency to more accurately monitor the sound pressure level exposure of a user.

Claims (92)

1. A device comprising:

a processor;

a switch;

a first audio modification component releasably coupled to the switch;

a second audio modification component releasably coupled to the switch;

a computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

receive a first signal associated with a hearing capability of a first user;

cause the switch to couple to the first audio modification component based at least in part on the hearing capability of the first user;

receive a second signal associated with a hearing capability of a second user; and

cause the switch to couple to the second audio modification component based at least in part on the hearing capability of the second user, the first audio modification and the second audio modification configured to provided a fixed modulation to an audio signal.

2. The device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

a third audio modification component releasably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the computer-readable media stores additional computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

receive a third signal associated with a hearing capability of a third user; and

cause the switch to couple to the third audio modification component based at least in part on the hearing capability of the third user.

3. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first audio modification component includes:

an inductor having a first electrode;

a resistor having a first electrode coupled to the first electrode of the inductor and a second electrode; and

a capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the resistor.

4. The device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

a circuit to monitor a sound pressure level associated with the audio signal.

5. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first audio modification component includes:

a circuit including an inductor coupled to a second switch, the switch configured to releasably couple to a plurality restive elements, individual ones of the resistive elements having different restive values, and a capacitor coupled to the individual ones of the resistive elements.

6. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first audio modification component is configured to attenuate at least one of:

a low range frequency band;

a mid range frequency band; or

a high range frequency band.

7. The device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a second audio modification component is configured to attenuate at least one of:

a low range frequency band;

a mid range frequency band; or

a high range frequency band.

8. The device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising

a third audio modification component releasably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the computer-readable media stores additional computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

receive a sound pressure level associated with an audio signal; and

cause the switch to couple to the third audio modification component based at least in part on the hearing capability of the second user and the sound pressure level.

9. The device as recited in claim 8 , further comprising

a resistive element; and

wherein the computer-readable media stores additional computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

determine the sound pressure level based on a first sample of an audio signal captured along an audio path at a first node positioned prior to the resistive element and a second sample of the audio signal captured along the audio path at a second node positioned after the resistive element.

10. A method comprising:

sending a signal to a device to cause the device to generate a hearing evaluation;

receiving from the device a hearing loss profile;

sampling a first voltage;

applying a resistive value to the audio signal;

sampling a second voltage;

determining a current based at least in part on the first voltage and the second voltage; and

determining a sound pressure level based at least in part on the second voltage and the current; and

selecting an audio modification component from a plurality of audio modification components based at least in part on the hearing loss profile and the sound pressure level.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 , further comprising

receiving an audio signal from an audio source;

generating a modified audio signal based at least in part on the selected audio modification component; and

sending the modified audio signal to an output device.

12. The method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the device is the audio source.

13. A circuit comprising:

a first audio modification components having a first electrode and a second electrode, the second electrode of the first audio modification component coupled to a speaker;

a second audio modification components having a first electrode and a second electrode, the second electrode of the second audio modification component coupled to the speaker;

a switch having a first electrode and a second electrode, the second electrode of the switch couple to the first electrode of the first audio modification component; and

a controller to provide a selection signal to cause the second electrode of the switch to decouple from the first electrode of the first audio moderation component and to couple to the first electrode of the second audio modification component;

a first inductor having a first electrode and a second electrode;

a first resistive element having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first inductor and having a second electrode;

a first capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first resistive element and a second electrode coupled to ground;

a second inductor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first inductor and a second electrode;

a second resistive element having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the second inductor by the switch; and

a second capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the second resistive element and a second electrode coupled to ground.

14. The circuit as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

a first interface for releasably coupling to an audio source, the first interface configured to receive an audio signal from the audio source and the first interface coupled to the first electrode of the switch;

a second interface coupled to the second electrode of the first audio modification component and the second electrode of the second audio modification component and the second interface releasably coupled to the speaker.

15. The circuit as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

a resistive element having a first electrode coupled to the first electrode of the switch and a second electrode coupled to the output device;

a first node coupled between the switch and the restive element;

a second node coupled between the resistive element and the output device; and

a processor coupled to the first node and the second node, the processor configured to sample a first voltage at the first node and a second voltage at the second node.

16. The circuit as recited in claim 15 , wherein the controller is the processor.

17. The circuit as recited in claim 13 , further comprising:

a first inductor having a first electrode and a second electrode;

a first resistive element having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first inductor and having a second electrode;

a first capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first resistive element and a second electrode coupled to ground;

a second inductor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the first inductor and a second electrode;

a second resistive element having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the second inductor and having a second electrode coupled to the first electrode of the switch; and

a second capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the second resistive element and a second electrode coupled to ground.

18. The circuit as recited in claim 13 , wherein the controller provides the selection signal in response to receiving a hearing loss profile associated with the user.

19. The device as recited in claim 13 , wherein:

the first audio modification component is configure to provide no attenuation; and

the second audio modification component is configured to attenuate at least one of:

a low range frequency band;

a mid range frequency band; or

a high range frequency band.

20. The device as recited in claim 13 , wherein the second audio modification component includes:

an inductor having a first electrode;

a resistor having a first electrode coupled to the first electrode of the inductor and a second electrode; and

a capacitor having a first electrode coupled to the second electrode of the resistor.
