Abstract

A bicycle trainer includes a roller support assembly and a roller positioned about the roller support assembly wherein the roller includes an aperture. A fixing member is disposed in the aperture to secure the roller to the roller support assembly allowing rotation of the roller. An element capable of being sensed disposed in the aperture and a sensor is positioned within the trainer at a stationary location wherein the sensor is configured to sense the element and provide a signal indicative of rotation of the roller.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus for a bicycle trainer, the apparatus comprising:

a magnet;

a roller support having spaced-apart bearings; and

a roller assembly coupled to the roller support to rotate about a rotation axis, the roller assembly comprising:

a flywheel;

a roller having an outer cylindrical surface configured to support a tire of a bicycle thereon; and

a mounting member that rotates with the roller about the rotation axis, the mounting member having an aperture configured to receive and hold the magnet for rotation with the mounting member and the roller, wherein a top surface of the magnet is flush, substantially flush or lower than the outer cylindrical surface of the roller.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 and further comprising a sensor to sense rotation of the magnet.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the sensor includes an adhesive to mount the sensor to a support member of the apparatus.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the roller includes a roller aperture configured to hold the mounting member.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the roller includes a roller aperture, the aperture of the mounting member being aligned with the roller aperture on an axis orthogonal to the rotation axis.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the mounting member is a component separate from the flywheel and the roller and is attachable to the roller.

7. A bicycle trainer, comprising:

supports; and

an apparatus mounted to the supports, the apparatus comprising:

a magnet;

a roller support assembly having spaced-apart bearings; and

a roller assembly coupled to the roller support assembly, the roller assembly comprising:

a flywheel;

a roller having an outer cylindrical surface configured to engage a tire of a bicycle when the bicycle is mounted to the trainer; and

a mounting member being a component that is separate from the flywheel and a portion of the roller having the outer cylindrical surface, the mounting member being attachable to the roller to rotate with the roller about a rotation axis, the mounting member having an aperture configured to receive and hold the magnet for rotation with the mounting member and the roller, a depth of the aperture extending radially relative to the rotation axis.

8. The bicycle trainer of claim 7 and further comprising a sensor to sense rotation of the magnet.

9. The bicycle trainer of claim 8 wherein the sensor is mounted to a support member of the apparatus so as to be proximate the magnet as the magnet rotates about the rotation axis.

10. The bicycle trainer of claim 7 wherein the roller includes a roller aperture configured to hold the mounting member.

11. The bicycle trainer of claim 7 wherein the roller includes a roller aperture, the aperture of the mounting member being aligned with the roller aperture on an axis orthogonal to the rotation axis.

12. The bicycle trainer of claim 7 wherein the magnet is disposed axially between the spaced-apart bearings.
