Abstract

Example apparatus, systems and methods to desalt a sample are disclosed. An example method includes introducing a sample into an apparatus, in which the apparatus includes a sensor coupled to a substrate and an electrode. The example method also includes applying, via the electrode, an electric potential to the sample to redistribute ions in the sample relative to the sensor.

Claims (22)

1. A method comprising:

introducing a sample into an apparatus, the apparatus including:

a sensor coupled to a substrate; and

an electrode; and

applying, via the electrode, an electric potential to the sample to redistribute ions in the sample relative to the sensor.

2. The method of claim 1 further including moving the ions away from the sensor using the electric potential.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein moving the ions away from the sensor increases a Debye length of the sample.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising desalting the sample by moving the ions away from the sensor, wherein the ions are salt ions.

5. The method of claim 1 further including detecting, with the sensor, a presence of an analyte in the sample.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein detecting the presence of the analyte includes measuring a change in at least one of a resistance, a current, a capacitance, an impedance or a voltage across the sensor.

7. The method of claim 5 further including discontinuing the electric potential prior to detecting the presence of the analyte in the sample.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the sensor includes a field-effect transistor having a gate.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the gate is functionalized with a binding agent to interact with the analyte.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the gate includes a nanowire.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is a first electrode, the apparatus further including a second electrode, and wherein the first electrode and the second electrode create the electric potential to redistribute the ions.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are coupled to the substrate, and the sensor is located between the first electrode and the second electrode.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are substantially coplanar with the sensor on the substrate.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first electrode is a first desalting electrode and the second electrode is a second desalting electrode, and wherein the sensor includes a field-effect transistor having a source electrode, a drain electrode and a gate.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first desalting electrode, the source electrode, the drain electrode and the second desalting electrode are in a linear arrangement with the gate.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein applying the electric potential includes applying a positive electric voltage with the first electrode and applying a negative electric voltage with the second electrode.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the apparatus further includes a third electrode and a fourth electrode coupled the substrate, the first electrode, the second electrode, the third electrode and the fourth electrode being disposed on each of four sides around the sensor.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sample is a raw sample and does not contain a buffer solution of ionic concentration.
