Abstract

A folding score having a pair of laterally spaced, parallel scoring grooves which are individually asymmetrical. This invention also relates to a method and apparatus for forming the folding score.

Claims (8)

1. A folding score on a sheet material formed by a rotary press, wherein:

the folding score comprises:

a pair of individually asymmetrical, longitudinally extending, laterally spaced score lines on a first side of the sheet material, each score line comprising a flat outer surface extending at an angle relative to a top side of the first side of the sheet material; and

a self-contained single longitudinally inwardly extending groove disposed on a second, opposite side of the sheet material along a line parallel to and positioned between the spaced score lines; and wherein

the folding score is formed by the rotary press crushing the sheet material between a die roll and an anvil roll of the rotary press, the die roll comprising a pair of scoring members coupled to a die board of the die roll of the rotary press, the scoring members each comprising a scoring surface portion with an asymmetrical flat outer surface extending at an angle, the anvil roll comprising an anvil formed of a compressible rubber-type material, and wherein as the scoring surface portions rotationally press against the first side of the sheet material and form the laterally spaced score line, the second, opposite side of the sheet material is compressed against the anvil, the scoring members crush the sheet material between the die roll and the anvil roll, and the rubber-type material of the anvil bulges towards the sheet material and forces the sheet material into an area between the scoring surface portions forming the inwardly extending groove on the second, opposite side of the sheet material.

2. The folding score formed by the rotary press of claim 1 , wherein the inwardly extending groove forms a bulge on the first side of the sheet material between the score lines.

3. The folding score formed by the rotary press of claim 2 , wherein the bulge comprises an arcuate protrusion on the first side of the sheet material between the score lines.

4. The folding score formed by the rotary press of claim 3 , wherein a center line of the arcuate protrusion forms a central axis of the folding score and an outer surface of the folding score sufficiently facilitates the folding of the sheet material by stretching the sheet material away from the inwardly extending groove on the second, opposite side of the sheet material, whereby the score lines on the first side of the sheet material and the inwardly extending groove on the second, opposite side of the sheet material facilitate the accurate and predictable forward fold towards the center line of the arcuate protrusion.
