Abstract

A mechanical connector for securing a dowel rod to a frame of a dowel bar assembly as well as a dowel bar assembly are detailed. Each embodiment of the mechanical connector includes a portion to receive the dowel bar. A second portion of the mechanical connector engages the frame of the dowel bar assembly. A third portion of the mechanical connector engages a separate part of the frame further stabilizing the mechanical connector and frame.

Claims (36)

1. A connecting device for a dowel bar and frame wherein the frame includes a U-shaped portion over the dowel bar and the frame also includes a horizontal cross-member, the connecting device comprising:

a spring coil wire;

the spring coil wire comprising at least one circular member;

the at least one circular member forming a cavity;

wherein the cavity is capable of receiving the dowel bar;

the spring coil wire having a first and a second end;

wherein the second end has a hook for engaging the horizontal cross-member of the frame;

the spring coil wire further comprising section between the at least one circular member and the hook;

the section having a portion that extends substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the spring coil wire bendable whereby the second end can be selectively moved to disengage the spring coil wire from the horizontal cross-member.

2. A connecting device for a dowel bar and a frame wherein the frame includes a U-shaped portion over the dowel bar and the frame also includes a horizontal cross-member, the connecting device comprising:

at least one circular member;

the at least one circular member forming a cavity wherein the cavity is capable of receiving the dowel bar;

a spring coil wire having a first end and a second end wherein the second end has a hook adapted to secure the horizontal cross-member of the frame;

the spring coil wire having a section between the at least one circular member and the second end;

the section having a portion that extends substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the hook spaced a distance from a longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the distance perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the hook and the at least one circular member allow a mechanical connection;

wherein the connecting device secures the dowel bar and the frame without utilizing welds.

3. The connecting device of claim 2 , wherein:

there is a plurality of circular members.

4. A connecting device for a dowel bar and a frame wherein the frame includes a U-shaped portion over the dowel bar and the frame also includes a horizontal cross-member, the connecting device comprising:

a spring coil wire;

the spring coil wire comprising at least one circular member;

the at least one circular member forming a cavity wherein the cavity is adapted to receive the dowel bar;

the spring coil wire has a first end and a second end wherein the second end is curved to secure the horizontal cross-member of the frame;

the spring coil wire having a section between the at least one circular member and the second end;

the section having a portion that extends substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the second end spaced a distance from a longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

the distance perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the dowel bar;

wherein the second end helps maintains the connecting device in a particular position relative to the frame.

5. The connecting device of claim 4 , wherein:

the spring coil wire is bendable wherein the first end and the second end can be selectively moved to disengage the wire from the frame.

6. The connecting device of claim 5 , further comprising:

a plurality of circular members.
