Surgical pencil
Described herein generally are surgical pencils which define a channel to enable suctioning of materials and methods of operating the surgical pencils. In one example embodiment, the surgical pencils perform cutting and coagulation. In one example embodiment, the surgical pencils include a lighting device.
1. A surgical pencil comprising:
a housing, and
a surgical tool including a tip configured to perform one of cutting and coagulation,
wherein the housing includes a channel terminating near the tip and allowing suctioning at a surgery site,
wherein the tip is attachable to an elongated tube including an actuator, and
wherein the tip is moveable from an extended position to a retracted position completely within the channel without disturbing suctioning by moving the actuator between lockable positions in valleys on a track including peaks and valleys.
2. The surgical pencil of claim 1 , wherein the tip is formed substantially of a metal.
3. The surgical pencil of claim 1 , further including a light.
4. The surgical pencil of claim 1 , wherein the surgical tool is replaceable.
5. The surgical pencil of claim 1 , wherein suctioning is provided circumferentially around the surgical tool.
6. The surgical pencil of claim 1 , further comprising a printed circuit board configured to control the surgical pencil.
7. The surgical pencil of claim 6 , wherein the elongated tube is configured to couple the surgical tool to the printed circuit board.
8. The surgical pencil of claim 7 , wherein the elongated tube is configured to couple the surgical tool to the printed circuit board when moving the surgical tool.
9. The surgical pencil of claim 7 , wherein the elongated tube is configured to allow suctioning through a lumen running axially through the elongated tube.
10. The surgical pencil of claim 1 providing a suctioning of between about 50 mm-Hg and about 480 mm-Hg.
