Abstract

A staple cartridge that comprises a catridge body, a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body, and a compressible portion is disclosed. The compressible portion comprises a first portion, a second portion, and a structurally-deficient portion supporting the second portion. The structurally-deficient portion is configured to permit a collapsing motion of the second portion relative to the first portion. The structurally-deficient portion comprises a plurality of cell walls.

Claims (64)

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

a first portion;

a second portion; and

a structurally-deficient portion supporting the second portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion is configured to permit a collapsing motion of the second portion relative to the first portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion comprises a plurality of cell walls, and wherein at least one of the cell walls comprises a section that is thinner than an adjacent section.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a first layer, and wherein the second portion comprises a second layer.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 2 , wherein the second layer comprises a tissue-contacting surface.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the compressible portion is implantable.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the compressible portion comprises a bioabsorbable material.

6. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

a first portion;

a second portion; and

a structurally-deficient portion supporting the second portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion is configured to permit a collapsing motion of the second portion relative to the first portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion comprises a plurality of cell walls, and wherein the cell walls comprise a plurality of alternating furrows and ridges.

7. The staple cartridge of claim 6 , wherein the compressible portion is implantable.

8. The staple cartridge of claim 6 , wherein the compressible portion comprises a bioabsorbable material.

9. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

a first portion;

a second portion; and

a structurally-deficient portion supporting the second portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion is configured to permit a collapsing motion of the second portion relative to the first portion, wherein the structurally-deficient portion comprises a plurality of cell walls, and wherein the structurally-deficient portion comprises a plurality of cells at least partially defined by the cell walls.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of cells comprises hexagonal cells.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the compressible portion is implantable.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the compressible portion comprises a bioabsorbable material.

13. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

an outer layer comprising a first stiffness; and

an inner layer comprising a collapsible matrix, wherein the collapsible matrix comprises a second stiffness, and wherein the second stiffness is less than the first stiffness.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the collapsible matrix comprises a plurality of polygonal cells.

15. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the outer layer comprises a first outer layer, wherein the compressible portion further comprises a second outer layer comprising a third stiffness, and wherein the second stiffness is less than the third stiffness.

16. The staple cartridge of claim 15 , wherein the inner layer is positioned intermediate the first outer layer and the second outer layer.

17. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the inner layer comprises a plurality of support structures, and wherein the support structures form the collapsible matrix.

18. The staple cartridge of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the support structures comprises a section that is thinner than an adjacent section.

19. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the outer layer comprises a tissue-contacting surface.

20. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the compressible portion is implantable.

21. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the compressible portion comprises a bioabsorbable material.

22. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a deck;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

a first portion;

a second portion; and

an intermediate portion positioned intermediate the first portion and the second portion, wherein the intermediate portion comprises a lattice and a plurality of pockets defined in the lattice.

23. The staple cartridge of claim 22 , wherein the first portion comprises a tissue-contacting surface, and wherein the second portion comprises a deck-contacting surface.

24. The staple cartridge of claim 22 , wherein the first portion comprises a first stiffness, wherein the second portion comprises a second stiffness, wherein the intermediate portion comprises a third stiffness, and wherein the third stiffness is less than the first stiffness and the second stiffness.

25. The staple cartridge of claim 22 , wherein the compressible portion comprises a bioabsorbable material.

26. The staple cartridge of claim 22 , wherein the lattice comprises a corrugated lattice.

27. The staple cartridge of claim 22 , wherein the compressible portion is implantable.

28. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

a plurality of fasteners removably positioned in the cartridge body; and

a compressible portion, comprising:

a first layer comprising a first stiffness; and
