Abstract

A method and apparatus for performing path protection for rate-adaptive optics is provided. As part of the method, an aggregate input bit stream is received. The aggregate input bit stream is then transmitted using a rate-adaptive optical transceiver when transmitting on a first optical path. When the first optical path has a fault, the aggregate input bit stream is then transmitted on a second optical path using the rate-adaptive optical transceiver and a fixed-rate optical transceiver.

Claims (14)

1. An optical node, comprising:

a first optical transceiver;

at least one additional optical transceiver; and

an aggregate bit stream,

wherein when transmitting the aggregate bit stream to a second optical node using a first optical path, the first optical transceiver transmitting with a first transmittable bit rate is used, and wherein when transmitting the aggregate bit stream to the second optical node using a second optical path, the first optical transceiver transmitting with a second transmittable bit rate and the at least one additional optical transceiver are used, wherein a single wavelength is used to transmit the aggregate bit stream on the first optical path, and wherein a first wavelength and at least a second wavelength are used to transmit the aggregate bit stream on the second optical path.

2. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the first optical transceiver is a rate-adaptive optical transceiver having a plurality of input ports, and wherein the at least one additional optical transceiver is a fixed-rate optical transceiver.

3. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the first transmittable bit rate is greater than the second transmittable bit rate.

4. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the aggregate bit stream originates from at least two electrical input ports of the first optical transceiver.

5. An optical node, comprising:

a first optical transceiver;

at least one additional optical transceiver; and

an aggregate bit stream,

wherein when transmitting the aggregate bit stream to a second optical node using a first optical path, the first optical transceiver transmitting with a first transmittable bit rate is used, and wherein when transmitting the aggregate bit stream to the second optical node using a second optical path, the first optical transceiver transmitting with a second transmittable bit rate and the at least one additional optical transceiver are used, wherein an electrical output port on the first optical transceiver is used to send a portion of the aggregate bit stream to the at least one additional optical transceiver when transmitting on the second optical path.

6. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the first optical path and the second optical path begin on the same optical fiber exiting the optical node.
