Abstract

A nutrient composition comprises an essential nutrient in which at least one exchangeable H atom is 2 H and/or at least one C atom is 13 C. The nutrient is thus protected from, inter alia, active oxygen species.

Claims (22)

1. A method for treating an individual to reduce oxidative damages, comprising:

regularly administering to the individual an amount of an essential nutrient comprising an isotopically modified essential nutrient such that the isotopically modified essential nutrient or a metabolite thereof is incorporated into the individual's body following administration; and such amount is effective to significantly reduce the extent of oxidative damages in the individual,

wherein the essential nutrient has been isotopically modified at one or more positions in a manner that stabilizes the essential nutrient against oxidation, and wherein the concentration of the isotopically modified essential nutrient is above the naturally-occuring abundance level of the isotopically modified essential nutrient in the essential nutrient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient is a nucleic acid, lipid, or amino acid.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lipid is a fatty acid or fatty acid ester.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the essential nutrient is isotopically modified with at least 2 H or 13 C atom.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient comprises at least one 2 H bound to a C atom at a position most susceptible to oxidation.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the essential nutrient administered is sufficient to significantly reduce oxidative damages mediated by free radicals, reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species, or radiation in the individual.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amount of the essential nutrient administered is sufficient to significantly reduce lipid oxidation mediated by free radicals.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amount of the nutrient composition administered is sufficient to significantly reduce protein oxidation.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the amount of the nutrient composition administered is sufficient to significantly reduce nucleic acid oxidation.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient is isotopically modified with deuterium at one or more hydrogen position.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient is a lipid isotopically modified at least at one bis-allylic position.

12. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lipid is 11-D-linoleic acid or 11,11-D 2 -linoleic acid.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lipid is a (ω-3 fatty acid or (ω-6 fatty acid.

14. The method of claim 2 , wherein the amino acid is selected from the group consisting of Phe, Val, Trp, Thr, Ile, Met, His, Leu, Lys and Arg.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the amino acid is selected from the group consisting of Lys-D 2 , Arg-D 2 , Trp-D, Thr-D, Phe-D 4 , His-D Lys-D 3 13 C 2 , Arg-D 3 13 C 2 , Trp-D 4 13 C 4 , Val-D 3 13 C 3 , Thr-D 2 13 C 2 ; (S)-2,6-diaminohexanoic acid-6,6-D 2 , (S)-2-amino-5-guanidino pentanoic acid-5- 13 C,5,5-D 2 , and (S)-2-amino-5-guanidino pentanoic acid-5,5-D 2 .

16. The method of claim 2 , wherein the nucleic acid is isotopically modified with 13 C at one or more carbon position.

17. The method of claim 2 , wherein nucleic acid comprises the base 8-D-Deoxyguanosine.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient is suitable for intravenous delivery.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the essential nutrient is in a liquid form.

20. The method of claim 2 , wherein the essential nutrient is a food supplement, a foodstuff, a tablet, a solid medicament, or an injectable liquid.
