Abstract

A system is disclosed including, a light source; a converter configured to convert AC voltage to DC operating voltage; a power backup device coupled to the converter; a current source coupled to the power backup device, the current source being powered by the converter, the current source being configured to receive the DC operating voltage generated by the converter through the power backup device, and the current source being configured to output a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the light source based on the DC operating voltage; and a switching device coupled to the power backup device in parallel with the current source, the switching device being configured to couple the light source to the power backup device when the current source is disabled as a result of a supply of AC voltage to the converter being interrupted.

Claims (43)

1. A system comprising:

a light source;

a converter configured to convert AC voltage to DC operating voltage;

a power backup device coupled to the converter;

a current source coupled to the power backup device, the current source being powered by the converter, the current source being configured to receive the DC operating voltage generated by the converter through the power backup device, and the current source being configured to output a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the light source based on the DC operating voltage; and

a switching device coupled to the power backup device in parallel with the current source, the switching device being configured to couple the light source to the power backup device when the current source is disabled as a result of a supply of AC voltage to the converter being interrupted.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the current source is arranged on a first electrical path between the light source and the power backup device, and the switching device is arranged on a second electrical path between the light source and the power backup device that bypasses the current source.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the switching device is further coupled to the converter, and the converter is arranged to maintain the switching device in an open state when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the switching device includes a PMOS transistor, and the converter is arranged to apply the DC operating voltage on a gate of the PMOS transistor when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the PMOS transistor is configured to close the second electrical path when the DC operating voltage stops being applied on the gate of the PMOS transistor in response to an interruption of the supply of AC voltage to the converter.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller, wherein the PWM signal is generated further based on a control signal received by the current source from the controller.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the converter and the power backup device are connected to an AC power supply, and the power backup device is configured to disconnect the current source from the converter in response to detecting a loss of power from the AC power supply.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the converter and the power backup device are connected to an AC power supply,

the power backup device includes a battery having a positive terminal and a negative terminal, and

the power backup device is configured to connect the negative terminal of the battery to a return path for the light source in response to detecting a loss of power from the AC power supply.

9. A system comprising:

a light source;

a converter configured to convert AC voltage to DC operating voltage;

a power backup device coupled to the converter;

a current source arranged on a first electrical path between the power backup device and the light source, the current source being powered by the converter, the current source being configured to receive the DC operating voltage generated by the converter through the power backup device, and the current source being configured to output a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the light source based on the DC operating voltage; and

a switching device arranged on a second path between the power backup device and the light source that bypasses the current source, the switching device being configured to close the second path when the current source is disabled as a result of a supply of AC voltage to the converter being interrupted.

10. The system of claim 9 , the switching device and the current source are connected in parallel to the power backup device.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the switching device is further coupled to the converter, and the converter is arranged to maintain the switching device in an open state when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the switching device includes a PMOS transistor, and the converter is arranged to apply the DC operating voltage on a gate of the PMOS transistor when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the PMOS transistor is configured to close the second path when the DC operating voltage stops being applied on the gate of the PMOS transistor in response to an interruption of the supply of AC voltage to the converter.

14. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a controller, wherein the PWM signal is generated further based on a control signal received by the current source from the controller.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the converter and the power backup device are connected to an AC power supply, and the power backup device is configured to disconnect the current source from the converter in response to detecting a loss of power from the AC power supply.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the converter and the power backup device are connected to an AC power supply,

the power backup device includes a battery having a positive terminal and a negative terminal, and

the power backup device is configured to connect the negative terminal of the battery to a return path for the light source in response to detecting a loss of power from the AC power supply.

17. A system comprising:

a first light source;

a second light source;

a converter configured to convert AC voltage to DC operating voltage;

a power backup device coupled to the converter;

a first current source coupled to the power backup device, the first current source being powered by the converter, the first current source being configured to receive the DC operating voltage generated by the converter through the power backup device, and the first current source being configured to output a first pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the first light source based on the DC operating voltage;

a second current source coupled to the power backup device, the second current source being configured to receive the DC operating voltage independently of the power backup device, and the second current source being configured to output a second pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the second light source based on the DC operating voltage; and

a switching device coupled to the power backup device in parallel with the first current source, the switching device being configured to couple the first light source to the power backup device when the first current source is disabled as a result of a supply of AC voltage to the converter being interrupted.

The system of claim 17 , wherein the first current source is arranged on a first electrical path between the first light source and the power backup device, and the switching device is arranged on a second electrical path between the first light source and the power backup device that bypasses the first current source.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the switching device is further coupled to the converter, and the converter is arranged to maintain the switching device in an open state when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the switching device includes a PMOS transistor, and the converter is arranged to apply the DC operating voltage on a gate of the PMOS transistor when the supply of AC voltage to the converter is available.
