Abstract

Spinal tissue distraction devices that include a member which has a pre-deployed configuration for insertion between tissue layers and a deployed configuration in which the member, by change of configuration, forms a support structure for separating and supporting layers of spinal tissue.

Claims (30)

1. A method of treating a vertebral body having a cortical rim and superior and inferior endplates defining an internal region therewithin, the method comprising:

inserting a generally elongated intravertebral implant in a substantially linear configuration into the internal region of the vertebral body, the general elongated intravertebral implant including a plurality of open slots spaced apart along the implant, the slots extending through upper, lower and inside surfaces of the implant;

forming the generally elongated intravertebral implant into a generally helical implanted configuration within the interior region of the vertebral body defining support structure that includes a plurality of vertically adjacent windings and wherein the slots of the generally elongated intravertebral implant remain open through the inside surface in the implanted configuration.

2. The method of claim 1 including injecting bone filler material through the implant and through the slots into the vertebral body.

3. The method of claim 1 including advancing the intravertebral implant along a guidewire into the implanted configuration in the vertebral body.

The method of claim 1 further comprising: providing access into the internal region of the vertebral body through an elongated cannula; advancing a guide wire through the cannula and into the internal region of the vertebral body, a distal end portion of the guidewire forming a vertical helical configuration in the internal region; advancing the implant along and constrained by the guidewire to form the implant into a helical configuration within the internal region; withdrawing the guidewire from the internal region and injecting bone filler material through the implant and through the slots into the vertebral body.

5. A method for treating the spine, comprising:

advancing an elongated member into spinal tissue in a substantially straight configuration;

changing the elongated member into a helical configuration including a plurality of windings defining an inner space;

flowing a flowable material into the inner space defined by the windings.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the flowable material comprises one or more of bone filler, bone cement, allograph and autograph.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the flowable material comprises a biocompatible material.

8. The method of claim 5 wherein the flowable material comprises a therapeutic agent.

9. The method of claim 5 wherein the elongated member defines a barrier when the elongated member is in the helical configuration, and wherein the barrier substantially prevents flowable material from flowing out of the inner space defined by the plurality of windings.

10. The method of claim 5 wherein the elongated member includes a passageway, and the step of flowing the flowable material into the inner space comprises flowing the flowable material through the passageway of the elongated member.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the elongated member includes a plurality of apertures in communication with the passageway wherein apertures direct flowable material into the inner space.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the apertures comprise slots spaced along the elongated member.

13. A method for treating the spine, comprising:

advancing a distal end portion of an elongated guide member into spinal tissue in a substantially straight configuration;

changing the distal end portion of the elongated guide member into a substantially helical configuration;

advancing an elongated member along the distal end portion of the elongated guide member, the elongated member substantially conforming to the helical configuration of the distal end portion of the guide member so that the elongated member is formed into a substantially helical configuration comprising a plurality of coils defining an inner space;

flowing a flowable material into the inner space defined by the coils.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the flowable material comprises one or more of bone filler, bone cement, allograph and autograph.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the flowable material comprises a biocompatible material.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the flowable material comprises a therapeutic agent.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the elongated member defines a barrier when the elongated member is in the helical configuration, and the barrier substantially prevents flowable material from flowing out of the inner space defined by the plurality of coils.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein the elongated member includes a passageway, and flowing the flowable material into the inner space comprises flowing the flowable material through the passageway of the elongated member.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the elongated member includes a plurality of apertures in communication with the passageway wherein apertures direct flowable material into the inner space.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the apertures comprise slots spaced along the elongated member.

21. The method of claim 13 further including removing the distal end portion of the guide member from the spinal tissue.
