Abstract

An input module for an industrial controller is configurable to simplify setup and commissioning. The input module includes input terminals configurable, for example, as a counter input. Still other input terminals may be configured to trigger events as a function of the input signals present at the terminals. Time signals corresponding to transitions in state of the input terminals, triggering of events, or operation of the counters may be recorded. The input module is further configurable to transmit data back to the processor or to transmit data directly to another module in the industrial control network.

1. An input module for an industrial controller configured to control an industrial machine or process, the input module comprising:

a plurality of input terminals, wherein each input terminal is configured to receive an input signal from a device on the industrial machine or process;

a memory device configured to store a series of instructions and a plurality of configuration parameters, wherein the configuration parameters include at least one parameter corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals;

a logic circuit connected between the plurality of input terminals and a processor, wherein the logic circuit is operable to process and transfer each input signal received at the plurality of input terminals to the processor; and

the processor configured to execute the series of instructions to:

read each parameter corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals, and

process the input signal for each input terminal as a function of the parameter corresponding to the input terminal.

2. The input module of claim 1 wherein the logic circuit includes first logic circuitry operable to receive a first portion of the input signals and second logic circuitry operable to receive a second portion of the input signals, wherein the logic circuit is operable to selectively route the input signals to one of the first and second logic circuitry as a function of the at least one configuration parameter corresponding to the input terminal at which the input signal is received.

3. The input module of claim 2 wherein one of the first and the second logic circuitry is a counter logic circuit and one of the first and second portions of input signals is identified as a counter terminal.

4. The input module of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of filters, wherein each filter corresponds to one of the plurality of input terminals and wherein the at least one parameter corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals defines operation of the filter for each input terminal.

5. The input module of claim 4 wherein the configuration parameters define a duration for each transition between a first state and a second state of the input signal, wherein the input signal must remain in the second state for at least the duration to indicate a valid change in state.

6. The input module of claim 5 wherein the logic circuit includes the filter for each of the input signals and receives the duration for each filter from one of the processor and the memory device.

7. The input module of claim 4 wherein the processor is further configured to execute each the series of instructions to read the configuration parameters defining operation of the filter and to execute the filter for each input terminal.

8. The input module of claim 1 wherein:

the configuration parameters define a mask,

the mask identifies a first portion of the plurality of input terminals which are used to generate an event, and

the mask identifies a second portion of the plurality of input terminals which are not used to generate the event.

9. The input module of claim 8 wherein the configuration parameters define a desired value for each of the first portion of the plurality of input terminals and wherein the processor is further configured to generate the event when the input signal corresponding to each terminal in the first portion of the plurality of input terminals matches the desired value for the corresponding input terminal.

10. An input module for an industrial controller configured to control an industrial machine or process, the input module comprising:

a plurality of input terminals, wherein each input terminal is configured to receive an input signal from a device on the industrial machine or process;

a memory device configured to store a series of instructions and a plurality of configuration parameters, wherein the configuration parameters include at least one parameter corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals and wherein the at least one parameter defines, at least in part, the input signal received at the corresponding input terminal;

a processor configured to execute the series of instructions; and

a logic circuit connected between the plurality of input terminals and the processor, the logic circuit including first and second logic circuitry, wherein the logic circuit is in communication with the memory device to read the configuration parameters corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals, the logic circuit is operable process at least a first portion of the input signals with the first logic circuitry and a second portion of the input signals with the second logic circuitry, and the logic circuitry is operable to selectively transfer each input signal received at the plurality of input terminals to one of the first logic circuitry and the second logic circuitry as a function of the configuration parameters corresponding to each of the plurality of input terminals.

11. The input module of claim 10 wherein one of the first and the second logic circuitry is a counter logic circuit and one of the first and second portions of input signals is identified as a counter terminal.

12. The input module of claim 10 wherein the logic circuit is further configured to transmit the processed input signals from each of the first logic circuitry and the second logic circuitry to the processor.

13. The input module of claim 12 wherein:

the input signal includes at least a first state and a second state,

the configuration parameters include at least one additional parameter defining an override value for at least one of the input signals, and

the logic circuit transmits the override value to the processor and blocks the input signal when an override command is enabled on the corresponding input terminal.

14. The input module of claim 12 wherein:

the configuration parameters define a mask,

the mask identifies a first portion of the plurality of input terminals which are used to generate an event, and

the mask identifies a second portion of the plurality of input terminals which are not used to generate the event.

15. The input module of claim 14 wherein the configuration parameters define a desired value for each of the first portion of the plurality of input terminals and wherein the processor is further configured to generate the event when the input signal corresponding to each terminal in the first portion of the plurality of input terminals matches the desired value for the corresponding input terminal.
