Abstract

RFID readers may be configured to recover multiple, collided RFID tag signals. An RFID reader may receive a collided reply waveform including at least first and second tag responses. The reader may determine that the collided reply waveform contains multiple tag responses and recover the first and second tag responses from the collided reply waveform. The reader may first recover the first tag response, reconstruct the first tag response, and subtract the reconstructed first tag response from the collided reply waveform to form a modified tag response. The reader may then recover the second tag response from the modified tag response.

Claims (54)

1. A method to resolve collided radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag replies, the method comprising:

transmitting a request for a tag identifier;

receiving a waveform;

determining that the waveform is collided; and

recovering, from the waveform, at least a first tag reply and a second tag reply.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the waveform is collided comprises:

generating a frequency-domain representation of the waveform; and

determining that the frequency-domain representation includes a plurality of features, wherein each of the features corresponds to a distinct tag reply.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein generating the frequency-domain representation comprises generating the frequency-domain representation using at least one of a Fourier transform technique, a fast Fourier transform technique, and a discrete Fourier transform technique.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of features includes at least one of a carrier feature and a sideband feature.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

recovering, from the first tag reply, at least one of a first tag identifier and a first item identifier; and

recovering, from the second tag reply, at least one of a second tag identifier and a second item identifier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second tag replies are at least partially superimposed on each other within the waveform.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag; and

in response to determining that the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag, transmitting a signal based on the second tag reply.

8. A method to resolve collided radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag replies, the method comprising:

transmitting a request for a tag identifier;

receiving a first collided reply waveform including at least two collided tag replies;

recovering a first tag reply from the first collided reply waveform;

reconstructing a first reply waveform corresponding to the first tag reply;

subtracting the first reply waveform from the first collided reply waveform to form a modified reply waveform; and

recovering a second tag reply from the modified reply waveform.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining at least one adaptive filter parameter based on at least one previous, uncollided reply waveform, and wherein reconstructing the first reply waveform comprises:

reconstructing an ideal reply waveform from the first tag reply; and

distorting the ideal reply waveform based on the at least one adaptive filter parameter to reconstruct the first reply waveform.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the at least one adaptive filter parameter comprises determining the at least one adaptive filter parameter to reduce interference present in the at least one previous, uncollided reply waveform.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

recovering, from the first tag reply, at least one of a first tag identifier and a first item identifier; and

recovering, from the second tag reply, at least one of a second tag identifier and a second item identifier.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first and second tag replies are at least partially superimposed on each other within the waveform.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

determining whether the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag; and

in response to determining that the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag, transmitting a signal based on the second tag reply.

14. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader system comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit and receive RF waveforms; and

a processor coupled to the transceiver and configured to:

cause the transceiver to transmit a request for a tag identifier;

receive, via the transceiver, an RF waveform;

determine that the RF waveform is collided; and

recover, from the collided waveform, at least a first tag reply and a second tag reply.

15. The RFID reader system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to determine that the waveform is collided by:

generating a frequency-domain representation of the waveform; and

determining that the frequency-domain representation includes a plurality of features, wherein each of the features corresponds to a distinct tag reply.

16. The RFID reader system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate the frequency-domain representation using at least one of a Fourier transform technique, a fast Fourier transform technique, and a discrete Fourier transform technique.

17. The RFID reader system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of features includes at least one of a carrier peak feature and a sideband feature.

18. The RFID reader system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

recover, from the first tag reply, at least one of a first tag identifier and a first item identifier; and

recover, from the second tag reply, at least one of a second tag identifier and a second item identifier.

19. The RFID reader system of claim 14 , wherein the first and second tag replies are at least partially superimposed on each other within the waveform.

20. The RFID reader system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag; and

in response to determining that the first tag reply originates from a previously-observed tag, cause the transceiver to transmit a signal based on the second tag reply.
