Abstract

An apparatus comprises a body and a conduit. The body comprises an absorbent material. The conduit is in fluid communication with the body. The conduit has a suction opening positioned within the absorbent material. The conduit is operable to draw fluid away from the absorbent material. The apparatus may be positioned within the posterior choana or the nasopharynx of a patient using a deployment instrument. The apparatus may prevent fluids from draining from the nasal cavity into the patient's throat. In some instances, the apparatus is used as a plug during a sinus irrigation procedure to prevent irrigation fluid from traveling down the patient's throat.

Claims (29)

1. An apparatus comprising:

(a) a body, wherein the body comprises an absorbent material, wherein the body is configured to be disposed within an anatomical passageway, wherein the body is configured to expand to an expanded state, wherein the body is configured to absorb fluid to thereby expand the body to the expanded state, wherein an outer perimeter of the body is configured to contact an inner wall of the anatomical passageway in the expanded state; and

wherein the body has a closed distal end

(b) a conduit in fluid communication with the body, wherein the conduit includes a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the distal end comprises an oblique tip, wherein the distal end of the conduit is disposed within the body such that the oblique tip and the body define a gap, wherein the conduit is operable to draw fluid away from the absorbent material via the distal end of the conduit.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the conduit further comprises a lateral opening.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the lateral opening has a “V” shaped configuration.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the lateral opening has scalloped configuration.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the lateral opening is disposed within the absorbent body.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body defines a first distal recess and a second distal recess, wherein the first distal recess is proximal in location relative to the second distal recess.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first distal recess is larger than the second distal recess.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the conduit is located within both the first distal recess and the second distal recess.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the distal end of the conduit terminates within the second distal recess.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the second distal recess is larger than a diameter of the oblique tip, wherein the gap is defined by the second distal recess and the oblique tip.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a connector coupled with the proximal end of the conduit.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a tether, wherein the tether is coupled with the body, wherein the tether is further coupled with the connector.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the connector comprises a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the proximal end of the conduit is disposed within the distal end of the connector.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein further comprises a second absorbent body attached to the absorbent body, wherein the second absorbent body has a reduced cross-sectional area as compared to the absorbent body.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the conduit is disposed within the second absorbent body.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the second absorbent body has a circular cross-sectional shape.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the second absorbent body defines a channel sized to receive the conduit.

18. An apparatus comprising:

(a) a body, wherein the body comprises an absorbent material, wherein the body is configured to be disposed within an anatomical passageway, wherein the body is configured to expand to an expanded state, wherein the body is configured to absorb fluid to thereby expand the body to the expanded state, wherein an outer perimeter of the body is configured to contact an inner wall of the anatomical passageway in the expanded state, wherein the body defines a passageway; and

wherein the body has a closed distal end

(b) a conduit in fluid communication with the body, wherein the conduit includes a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the distal end of the conduit defines an oblique angle positioned within the passageway of the body such that the distal end of the conduit and the passageway of the body define a gap, wherein the conduit is operable to draw fluid away from the absorbent material via the distal end of the conduit.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the conduit defines a lateral aperture positioned within the passageway of the body.

20. An apparatus comprising:

(a) a body, wherein the body comprises an absorbent material, wherein the body is configured to be disposed within an anatomical passageway, wherein the body is configured to expand to an expanded state, wherein the body is configured to absorb fluid to thereby expand the body to the expanded state, wherein an outer perimeter of the body is configured to contact an inner wall of the anatomical passageway in the expanded state, wherein the body defines a recess extending from an exterior of the body and terminating within the body at a distal interior surface; and

wherein the body has a closed distal end

(b) a conduit in fluid communication with the body, wherein the conduit includes a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the distal end of the conduit defines an oblique angle, wherein the oblique angle is housed within the recess proximal to the distal interior surface of the body such that the distal end of the conduit and the recess define a gap, wherein the conduit is operable to draw fluid away from the absorbent material via the distal end of the conduit.
