Abstract

Exemplary embodiments are directed to sensor apparatuses for attachment to an animal that include a housing and a sensor assembly. The housing can be attachable to the animal and includes an internal cavity formed therein. The sensor assembly can be disposed within the internal cavity of the housing. The sensor assembly includes a force sensor and an accelerometer arranged to detect force data and accelerometer data representative of a physiological state of the animal. Exemplary embodiments are also directed to method and sensor systems for detecting a physiological state of an animal.

Claims (30)

1. A sensor apparatus for attachment to an animal comprising:

a housing attachable to the animal, the housing having an internal cavity formed therein; and

a sensor assembly disposed within the internal cavity, the sensor assembly including a capacitance sensor arranged to detect proximity to or contact with another animal and a motion sensor arranged to detect motion of the animal, said proximity to or contact with another animal in combination with the detected motion of the animal being representative of a physiological state of the animal.

2. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a power source, the power source including at least one of a photovoltaic element, a chemical battery, a super capacitor, a fuel cell, or a mechanical energy harvest system.

3. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a processor.

4. The sensor apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises at least one of a visual indicator, an audio indicator, or a radio indicator operatively connected to the processor for generating a signal representative of the physiological state of the animal.

5. The sensor apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a visual indicator, and wherein the visual indicator comprises an LED.

6. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a transmitter for transmitting sensor data to an electronic device configured to store the data.

7. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the physiological state of the animal comprises estrus or standing heat.

8. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a force sensor arranged to measure a magnitude of a force applied to the animal and a length of time the force is applied to the animal.

9. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a transmitter for transmitting the sensor data to an electronic device configured to store the data.

10. The sensor apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer that detects a length of time of the motion.

11. A method for detecting a physiological state of an animal comprising:

detecting with a sensor apparatus having a capacitance sensor mounted to the animal proximity to or contact with another animal with the sensor apparatus;

detecting with the sensor apparatus having a motion sensor mounted to the animal motion of the animal, proximity to or contact with another animal and motion of the animal being representative of a physiological state of the animal;

determining the physiological state of the animal based on the detected proximity or contact with another animal and motion of the animal; and

generating a visual, audio, or radio indication of the physiological state of the animal.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of measuring a magnitude of a force applied to the animal and a length of time the force is applied to the animal.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the detected proximity or contact in combination with the detected motion are representative of estrus or standing heat of the animal.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer that detects a length of time of the detected motion.

15. A method for detecting a physiological state of an animal comprising:

detecting with a sensor apparatus having a capacitance sensor mounted to the animal proximity to or contact with another animal with the sensor apparatus;

detecting with the sensor apparatus having a motion sensor mounted to the animal motion of the animal, proximity to or contact with another animal and motion of the animal being representative of a physiological state of the animal;

transmitting sensor data;

receiving the sensor data;

analyzing the sensor data; and

determining the physiological state of the animal.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising the step of measuring a magnitude of a force applied to the animal and a length of time the force is applied to the animal.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the detected proximity or contact in combination with the detected motion are representative of estrus or standing heat of the animal.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer that detects a length of time of the detected motion.
