Abstract

Disclosed herein are apparatuses, systems, methods, and machine readable media for activating a portable camera in response to the activity of a firearm, and for implementing and using a system for identifying an individual who discharged a firearm, and for recording, assessing, identifying, and transmitting information related to the firing of a firearm, and for monitoring the status of an implement at a mount, and for using a charging device for delivering electrical power to components of a firearm. A communications channel may be established between a firearm telematics sensor and a video camera, sometimes by means of intermediary devices. A communications channel may be established between a mount (e.g., holster) telematics device and local and/or remote monitoring service components, sometimes by means of intermediary devices. When the telematics sensor detects that its associated firearm is removed from its holster, or in motion, or being discharged, it may signal the camera to initiate recording. When the telematics device detects that its associated firearm is removed from its holster, the change in status can be reported to the local and/or remote system.

Claims (32)

1. A system, comprising:

a camera;

a firearm;

a holster for receiving the firearm; and

two or more telematics sensor devices, the two or more telematics sensor devices comprising:

a holster telematics sensor device mounted on the holster, the holster telematics sensor device having a first processor, a first sensor, a first communication module for receiving and sending signals over a wireless network, and a first storage component and configured for detecting an unholstering event, wherein the holster telematics sensor device is self-contained; and

a firearm telematics sensor device attached to the firearm, the firearm telematics sensor device having a second processor, a second sensor, a second communication module for receiving and sending signals over a wireless network, and a second storage component and configured for detecting a firearm-discharge event, wherein the firearm telematics sensor device is self-contained;

wherein the firearm telematics sensor device stores a first rule set for determining an event category for each of one or more events sensed by the firearm telematics sensor device, and a second rule set for defining behaviors of the camera and the firearm telematics sensor device or the holster telematics sensor device, the second processor configured to execute the first and second rule sets, and further to save metadata to the second storage component, wherein the metadata comprise respective determined event categories for each event sensed by the firearm telematics sensor device, wherein each such sensed event is one of the one or more events sensed by the firearm telematics sensor device;

wherein the camera, the firearm telematics sensor device, and the holster telematics sensor device are in communication via a personal area network, and wherein the camera is configured to change status following receipt of a signal received by the camera from the firearm telematics sensor device, said signal transmitted responsive to determination that an event of a first event category has been detected.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more events sensed by the firearm telematics sensor device comprises a firearm-discharge event, and the corresponding event category is “firearm discharge”.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the firearm telematics sensor device is attached to the firearm through insertion into a cavity within a grip of the firearm.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the first rule set comprises instructions to, by the firearm telematics sensor device, record a time series of inertial measurements, identify windows of time that represent a firearm-discharge event based on the time series, and associate a “firearm discharge” category with the corresponding portion of the time series.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the second rule set comprises instructions to, by the firearm telematics sensor device, send a request to turn on the camera, wake the camera, activate recording of video at the camera, mark existing video to be retained, or mark new video to be retained upon receiving a notification or detecting that the firearm has been unholstered.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the saved metadata further comprises a time stamp, location coordinates, altitude, temperature, firearm orientation, firearm bearing, ammunition type, or remaining ammunition.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the personal area network is a Bluetooth network.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the status change of the camera is turn on, wake, activate video recording, mark existing video to be retained, or mark new video to be retained.

9. A system, comprising:

a camera;

a firearm;

a holster for receiving the firearm; and

two or more telematics sensor devices, the two or more telematics sensor devices comprising:

a holster telematics sensor device mounted on the holster, the holster telematics sensor device having a first processor, a first sensor, a first communication module for receiving and sending signals over a wireless network, and a first storage component and configured for detecting an unholstering event, wherein the holster telematics sensor device is self-contained; and

a firearm telematics sensor device attached to the firearm, the firearm telematics sensor device having a second processor, a second sensor, a second communication module for receiving and sending signals over a wireless network, and a second storage component and configured for detecting a firearm-discharge event, wherein the firearm telematics sensor device is self-contained; and

wherein the holster telematics sensor device stores a first rule set for determining an event category for each of one or more events sensed by the holster telematics sensor device, and a second rule set for defining behaviors of the camera and the firearm telematics sensor device or the holster telematics sensor device, the second processor configured to execute the first and second rule sets, and further to save metadata to the second storage component, wherein the metadata comprise respective determined event categories for each event sensed by the holster telematics sensor device, wherein each such sensed event is one of the one or more events sensed by the holster telematics sensor device; and

wherein the camera, the firearm telematics sensor device, and the holster telematics sensor device are in communication via a personal area network, and wherein the camera is configured to change status following receipt of a signal received by the camera from the holster telematics sensor device, said signal transmitted responsive to determination that an event of a first event category has been detected.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more events sensed by the holster telematics sensor device comprises an unholstering event, and the corresponding event category is “unholstered”, “partially unholstered”, “fully unholstered”, or “unholstered and weapon drawn”.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the holster telematics sensor device is attached to the surface of the holster using an adhesive material.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the first rule set comprises instructions to, by the holster telematics sensor device, periodically conduct a current measurement concerning the firearm holstering status, compare the measurement to a previous measurement, and then the comparison indicates the firearm holstering status has changed from holstered to unholstered, associate an “unholstered” category with a time point associated with the current measurement.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the second rule set comprises instructions to, by the holster telematics sensor device, send a request to turn on the camera, wake the camera, activate recording of video at the camera, mark existing video to be retained, or mark new video to be retained upon receiving a notification or detecting that the firearm has been unholstered.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the saved metadata further comprises a time stamp, location coordinates, altitude, temperature, firearm orientation, firearm bearing, ammunition type, or remaining ammunition.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the personal area network is a Bluetooth network.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the status change of the camera is turn on, wake, activate video recording, mark existing video to be retained, or mark new video to be retained.
