Abstract

An overvoltage recovery circuit (ORC), a controller for an HVAC system and an HVAC system are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the ORC includes: (1) a first supply voltage terminal connected to a first voltage supply, (2) a second supply voltage terminal connected to a second voltage supply, (3) interruption circuitry including a switch and a trip terminal connected to the second supply voltage terminal and (4) detection circuitry connected to the first supply voltage terminal and the switch of the interruption circuitry, the detection circuitry configured to operate the switch in response to an overvoltage condition at the first supply voltage terminal.

Claims (31)

1. An overvoltage recovery circuit (ORC), comprising:

a first supply voltage terminal connected to a first voltage supply;

a second supply voltage terminal connected to a second voltage supply;

interruption circuitry comprising a switch and a trip terminal;

detection circuitry connected to the first supply voltage terminal and the switch of the interruption circuitry, the detection circuitry configured to operate the switch in response to an overvoltage condition at the first supply voltage terminal; and

wherein the detection circuitry comprises an overvoltage protection device connected in series with a unidirectional transient-voltage-suppression diode and in parallel with an undervoltage protection device.

2. The ORC as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the interruption circuitry is connected to the second supply voltage terminal.

3. The ORC as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the detection circuitry comprises a switch and a silicon controlled rectifier connected to the first supply voltage terminal.

4. The ORC as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the silicon controlled rectifier controls operation of the switch.

5. The ORC as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the interruption circuitry is configured to provide a trip signal at the trip terminal in response to the operation of the switch.

6. The ORC as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the trip signal initiates an interruption of the first supply voltage to the first supply voltage terminal.

7. The ORC as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the unidirectional transient-voltage-suppression diode is connected to the first supply voltage terminal.

8. The ORC as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the detection circuitry comprises an undervoltage protection device connected in series with the unidirectional transient-voltage-suppression diode.

9. A controller for a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the controller comprising:

a power supply;

a hardware watchdog coupled to the power supply;

an overvoltage recovery circuit (ORC) connected to the power supply; and

a user interface coupled to the ORC and the power supply, the ORC comprising:

a first supply voltage terminal connected to a first voltage supply;

a second supply voltage terminal connected to a second voltage supply;

interruption circuitry including a switch and a trip terminal;

detection circuitry connected to the first supply voltage terminal and the switch of the interruption circuitry, the detection circuitry configured to operate the switch in response to an overvoltage condition at the first supply voltage terminal;

wherein the interruption circuitry is configured to provide a trip signal at the trip terminal in response to the operation of the switch; and

wherein said trip signal initiates a reset of the user interface.

10. The controller as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the interruption circuitry is connected to the second supply voltage terminal.

11. The controller as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the trip signal initiates an interruption of the first supply voltage to the first supply voltage terminal.

12. The controller as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the hardware watchdog receives the trip signal and interrupts voltage supply to the first supply voltage terminal.

13. The controller as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the user interface is coupled to the ORC and the power supply via the hardware watchdog.

14. The controller as claimed in claim 9 further comprising a processor connected to the hardware watchdog and the user interface, wherein the controller is configured to direct operation of the HVAC system.

15. The controller as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the power supply provides the first voltage supply and the second voltage supply.

16. The controller as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the hardware watchdog is connected to the trip terminal and is configured to interrupt the first supply voltage in response to the overvoltage condition.
