Abstract

A surgical instrument including a customized patient-specific guide block is disclosed. The customized patient-specific guide block includes a first surface, a bone-facing surface, a second surface positioned opposite the first surface and the bone-facing surface, and a guide pin hole extending between the second surface and the bone-facing surface. The first surface has a customized prosthesis-specific negative contour shaped to match a corresponding contour of a prosthetic component, and the customized prosthesis-specific negative contour includes a concave surface shaped to match a convex surface of the corresponding contour of the prosthetic component. A method of performing an orthopedic surgical procedure is also disclosed.

a customized patient-specific alignment guide including a guide pin hole and a post configured to engage a universal cutting block to position the universal cutting block in a preplanned position and orientation on a patient's bone.

2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the customized patient-specific alignment guide includes a body including a bone-facing surface and an outer surface positioned opposite the bone-facing surface, and

wherein the post of the patient-specific alignment guide includes a first end coupled to the bone-facing surface of the body and a second end positioned opposite the first end.

3. The surgical instrument system of claim 2 , wherein the post includes a block-engaging surface positioned on the second end of the post, and

wherein the block-engaging surface is configured to be flush with a medial side wall of the universal cutting block of position the universal cutting block in the preplanned position and orientation on the patient's bone.

4. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the patient-specific alignment guide includes a body including an anterior end, a posterior end positioned opposite the anterior end, and a middle section extending between the anterior end and the posterior end, and

wherein the post of the patient-specific alignment guide includes an anterior post coupled to the anterior end of the body and a posterior post coupled to the posterior end of the body.

5. The surgical instrument system of claim 4 , wherein the patient-specific alignment guide includes a marking tab defined on the body, the marketing tab being configured to be aligned with a cutting slot included in the universal cutting block to position the universal cutting block in the preplanned position and orientation.

6. The surgical instrument system of claim 5 , wherein the making tab is positioned on the middle section of the body of the patient-specific alignment guide between the anterior post and the posterior post.

7. The surgical instrument system of claim 2 , wherein the guide pin hole of the patient-specific alignment guide is a pair of guide pin holes extending through the body from the outer surface to the bone-facing surface of the patient-specific alignment guide.

8. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising an intramedullary shaft configured to be secured in the patient's bone along an anatomical axis of the patient's bone,

wherein the post of the patient-specific alignment guide is configured to engage the universal cutting block to rotate the universal cutting block about the intramedullary shaft to the preplanned position and orientation.

9. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising the universal cutting block, wherein the universal cutting block includes a body including a bone-engaging surface, an outer surface positioned opposite the bone-engaging surface, and a medial side wall extending between the outer surface and the bone-engaging surface.

10. The surgical instrument system of claim 9 , wherein the universal cutting block includes (i) a slot extending in the anterior-posterior direction and extending through the body from the outer surface to the bone-engaging surface of the body and (ii) a bushing sized to be received in the slot and moveable in the anterior-posterior direction within the slot relative to the body,

wherein the bushing includes a body including a bone-facing surface, an outer surface positioned opposite the bone-facing surface, and a bore extending through the body from the outer surface to the bone-facing surface of the bushing.

11. The surgical instrument system of claim 10 , further comprising an intramedullary shaft configured to be secured to the patiet's bone along an anatomical axis of the patient's bone,

wherein the bore of universal cutting block is configured to receive the shaft, and

wherein the post of the patient-specific alignment guide is configured to engage the universal cutting block to rotate the universal cutting block about the intramedullary shaft to the preplanned positioned and orientation.

12. The surgical instrument system of claim 9 , wherein the universal cutting block includes (i) a cutting slot extending through the body from the outer surface to the bone-engaging surface of the universal cutting block and (ii) a cutting slot opening includes in the cutting slot and positioned on the outer surface of the cutting block.

13. The surgical instrument system of claim 12 , wherein the patient-specific alignment guide includes a marking tab configured to be aligned with the cutting slot opening of the universal cutting block to position the universal cutting block in the preplanned position and orientation.

14. The surgical instrument system of claim 13 , wherein the patient-specific alignment guide includes a body including an anterior end, a posterior end positioned opposite the anterior end, and a middle section extending between the anterior end and the posterior end,

wherein the post of the patient-specific alignment guide includes an anterior post coupled to the anterior end of the body and a posterior post coupled to the posterior end of the body, and

wherein the marking tab is positioned on the middle section of the patient-specific alignment guide between the anterior post and the posterior post.

15. A method of performing an orthopaedic surgical procedure, the method comprising:

aligning a universal cutting block with an anatomical axis of a patient's bone,

advancing the universal cutting block along the anatomical axis of the bone into contact with the bone,

aligning an alignment guide with a custom-located guide pin that is secured in the bone,

advancing the alignment guide along the guide pin and into contact with the universal cutting block to cause the universal cutting block to rotate about the anatomical axis to a preplanned orientation,

sliding the universal cutting block anteriorly or posteriorly relative to the alignment guide to a preplanned position in the preplanned orientation,

removing the alignment guide, and

resecting an end of the bone using the universal cutting block to guide the resection.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein advancing the alignment guide along the guide pin and into contact with the universal cutting block includes bringing a block-engaging surface of a post of the alignment guide flush with a sidewall of the universal cutting block to rotate the universal cutting block to the preplanned position and orientation.
