Abstract

Technology for performing multiple timing advances in a carrier aggregation communication system is disclosed. A method comprises communicating a random access preamble from a UE to an eNodeB via a PCell associated with a selected component carrier of the carrier aggregation. A Random Access Response (RAR) is received at the UE from the eNodeB for the PCell. The RAR contains a timing advance adjustment instructing the UE to adjust a timing of a PCell wireless communication. A request is received at the UE to adjust a timing of an SCell communication. A random access preamble is communicated to the UE via the SCell. An RAR is received at the UE from the eNodeB for the SCell to adjust a timing advance of the SCell wireless communication.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus of a user equipment (UE) operable to adjust timing advances in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

memory configured to store instructions; and

one or more processors configured to, upon execution of the instructions, perform the following:

signal, at the UE, a random access preamble for transmission to an eNodeB; and

process, at the UE, a random access response (RAR) received from the eNodeB via a downlink shared channel (DL-SCH), wherein the RAR is received via the DL-SCH in response to transmission of the random access preamble from the UE to the eNodeB and the RAR includes an uplink timing advance for a secondary cell (SCell), wherein the RAR that includes the uplink timing advance for the SCell is received via the DL-SCH during a non-contention based random access procedure between the UE and the eNodeB.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a transceiver configured to:

transmit the random access preamble to the eNodeB on a random access channel (RACH) on an uplink; and

receive the RAR that includes the uplink timing advance for the SCell from the eNodeB on the DL-SCH.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an assignment of the random access preamble is received at the UE from the eNodeB via a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH).

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an assignment of the random access preamble is received at the UE from the eNodeB via dedicated signaling in a downlink.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an assignment of the random access preamble is received from the eNodeB via an activated secondary cell (SCell), wherein the activated secondary cell (SCell) is included in a group of secondary cells (SCells).

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the RAR is received from the eNodeB via a primary cell (PCell).

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the UE is connected to a primary cell (PCell) and a group of secondary cells (SCells) when the UE is configured for carrier aggregation (CA).

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the UE includes an antenna, a touch sensitive display screen, a speaker, a microphone, a graphics processor, an application processor, an internal memory, a non-volatile memory port, or combinations thereof.

9. An apparatus of an eNodeB operable to adjust timing advances in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

memory configured to store instructions; and

one or more processors configured to, upon execution of the instructions, perform the following:

process, at the eNodeB, a random access preamble received from a user equipment (UE); and

signal, at the eNodeB, a random access response (RAR) for transmission to the UE via a downlink shared channel (DL-SCH), wherein the RAR is transmitted to the UE via the DL-SCH in response to receiving the random access preamble from the UE and the RAR includes an uplink timing advance for a secondary cell (SCell), wherein the RAR that includes the uplink timing advance for the SCell is transmitted via the DL-SCH during a non-contention based random access procedure between the eNodeB and the UE.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a transceiver configured to:

receive, from the UE, the random access preamble on a random access channel (RACH), wherein the random access preamble is received via an activated secondary cell (SCell) included in a group of secondary cells (SCells); and

transmit, to the UE, the RAR on the DL-SCH, wherein the RAR is transmitted via a primary cell (PCell).

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors and memory are further configured to signal an assignment of the random access preamble to the UE via an activated secondary cell (SCell), wherein the activated secondary cell (SCell) is included in a group of secondary cells (SCells).

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the random access preamble is assigned in a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer.

13. At least one non-transitory machine readable storage medium having instructions embodied thereon for adjusting timing advances at a user equipment (UE), the instructions when executed by one or more processors perform the following:

signaling, using the one or more processors at the UE, a random access preamble for communication to an eNodeB via a random access channel (RACH) on an uplink; and

processing, using the one or more processors at the UE, a random access response (RAR) received from the eNodeB via a downlink shared channel (DL-SCH) and the RAR includes an uplink timing advance for a secondary cell (SCell), wherein the RAR that includes the uplink timing advance for the SCell is received via the DL-SCH during a non-contention based random access procedure between the UE and the eNodeB.

14. The at least one non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions when executed perform the following: signaling the random access preamble to the eNodeB via an activated secondary cell (SCell) included in a group of secondary cells (SCells).

15. The at least one non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein an assignment of the random access preamble is received from the eNodeB via an activated secondary cell (SCell), wherein the activated secondary cell (SCell) is included in a group of secondary cells (SCells).
