Abstract

Described herein are improved configurations for a wireless power transfer for electronic devices. In embodiments reconfigurable or flexible attachment between a source and a device is realized using permanent magnets or electromagnets. Magnetic material may be positioned on or around one or more of the resonator to provide for locations for attaching permanent magnets. A permanent magnet attached to or near one of a source or device or repeater resonators may be used to flexibly attach to the non-lossy magnetic material of another resonator structure. In embodiments, replacing lossy permanent magnets and/or electromagnets in even one of the resonators of a wireless power system may be advantageous to system performance.

Claims (22)

1. A wireless energy transfer system, comprising:

a coil comprising at least one loop of electrically conductive material and configured to receive an oscillating electrical current, and to generate an oscillating magnetic field in response to the electrical current; and

a member formed of magnetic material and positioned relative to the coil such that during operation of the system, when a device comprising a magnet is connected to the member, energy is transferred from the coil to the device through the oscillating magnetic field.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is positioned so that no energy is transferred from the coil to the device until the device comprising the magnet is connected to the member.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member comprises at least one substantially planar surface to which the magnet is connected during energy transfer.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is formed as a plurality of blocks of magnetic material, and wherein a gap is positioned between at least two of the blocks.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a power source coupled to the coil, wherein during operation of the system, the power source provides the oscillating electrical current to the coil.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic material comprises a ferrite material.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a capacitor in electrical communication with the coil, wherein the coil and the capacitor form at least a portion of a magnetic resonator having a resonant frequency.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the magnetic resonator has a quality factor greater than 100.

9. The system of claim 3 , wherein the coil is disposed at least partially on the at least one substantially planar surface of the member.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is integrated into a vehicle.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the system is disposed in or on a dashboard of the vehicle.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is positioned so that during operation, the member shields losses that would otherwise occur due to the magnet of the device.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is positioned such that the member attenuates at least some magnetic coupling that would otherwise occur between the oscillating magnetic field and the magnet absent the member.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprising the magnet is a mobile electronic device.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is positioned so that when a second device comprising a second magnet is connected to the member, energy is transferred from the coil to the second device through the oscillating magnetic field.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is configured so that energy is transferred from the coil to the device when the device is connected to the member at a first location on the member and in a first orientation at the first location, and when the device is connected to the member at a second location on the member and in a second orientation at the second location, wherein the second orientation corresponds to an angular offset relative to the first orientation.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is configured so that energy is transferred from the coil to the device while the device rotates from a first orientational alignment relative to the member to a second orientational alignment relative to the member.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the member is configured so that energy is transferred from the coil to the device when the device is connected to the member at a first location on the member and at a second location on the member.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coil has a central axis and the member is configured so that when the device is connected to the member, a device coil is aligned with the central axis and energy is received by the device coil from the oscillating magnetic field.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coil has a central axis and the member is configured so that when the device is connected to the member such that device coil is offset from the central axis in a direction orthogonal to the central axis, the device coil receives energy from the oscillating magnetic field.
