Abstract

A near-to-eye display device includes a spatial light modulator and a microdisplay. The spatial light modulator provides a high-resolution focused image for central vision. The microdisplay provides a low-resolution defocused image for peripheral vision. The display has a large field of view.

Claims (37)

1. A near-to-eye display device comprising:

a computer unit;

a point light source mounted to the near-to-eye display device;

a spatial light modulator (SLM) mounted to the near-to-eye display device and operatively coupled to the computer unit, wherein the near-to-eye display device when in use is less than 25 cm from a user's eye, wherein light produced by the point light source illuminates the SLM and gets modulated by the SLM to produce modulated light, and the modulated light is directed on an exit pupil plane that includes a useful portion, and wherein a light wave distribution within the useful portion includes a computed light distribution from a virtual scene computed by the computer unit; and

a microdisplay positioned on the near-to-eye display device to generate on a user's retina a defocused peripheral image that surrounds a focused image generated by the spatial light modulator, wherein the focused region is steerable to different locations on the microdisplay.

2. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM has a first pixel pitch and the microdisplay has a second pixel pitch that is greater than the first pixel pitch.

3. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the modulated light is steerable across the exit pupil plane to follow the motion of a user's eye pupil when the near-to-eye display device is in use.

4. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source comprises a plurality of light sources to emit light of different wavelengths.

5. The near-to-eye display device of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of light sources emit light sequentially.

6. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the defocused image generated by the microdisplay is lower resolution than the image generated by the SLM.

7. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM is mounted on a movable platform.

8. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM is mounted on a slotted movable platform.

9. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM includes at least one row of pixels.

10. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM has a vertical dimension of at least 2 mm.

11. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM presents a horizontal field of view of about 30 degrees.

12. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the microdisplay is mounted on a movable platform.

13. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the microdisplay is mounted on a slotted movable platform.

14. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the microdisplay comprises an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display.

15. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the microdisplay comprises a liquid crystal display.

16. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is reflective.

17. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator modulates only the phase, only the amplitude, or both phase and amplitude of the light that illuminates the SLM.

18. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the computer unit adds a controlled phase variation to the computed light distribution of the virtual scene such that speckle is reduced.

19. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the near-to-eye display device includes a head-worn display device.

20. A near-to-eye display device comprising:

a spatial light modulator configured to modulate light and to generate color pixels;

a microdisplay positioned on the near-to-eye display device to generate on a user's retina a peripheral image that surrounds an image generated by the spatial light modulator;

a pupil-tracking device to track a user's pupil position; and

a driver circuit operatively coupled to the spatial light modulator and to the microdisplay, and responsive to the pupil-tracking device to cause the spatial light modulator to modulate reflected light in a central region of the user's gaze and to cause the microdisplay to display pixels away from the central region of the user's gaze, wherein the near-to-eye display device when in use is less than 25 cm from the user's eye.

21. The near-to-eye display device of claim 20 , wherein the near-to-eye display device comprises a head-worn device.

22. The near-to-eye display device of claim 20 , wherein the spatial light modulator adds a controlled phase variation to the reflected light in a central region of the user's gaze such that speckle is reduced.

23. The near-to-eye display device of claim 20 , wherein the microdisplay has pixels having first resolution, wherein the spatial light modulator generates a focused image having a higher resolution than the first resolution, and wherein the focused image is steerable to different locations on the microdisplay to follow the user's pupil position.

24. A method comprising:

providing a near-to-eye display device that includes a spatial light modulator (SLM) mounted to the near-to-eye display device and a microdisplay mounted to the near-to-eye display device, wherein the near-to-eye display device is less than 25 cm from a user's eye when in use;

modulating light with the SLM;

generating a focused image that includes the SLM-modulated light;

generating a defocused peripheral image with the microdisplay; and

steering the focused region to different locations on the microdisplay.
