Abstract

An articulated harvesting combine includes of a forward power processing unit (PPU, 12 ) and a rear grain cart ( 14 ), wherein the PPU carries dual axially mounted engines ( 36 and 38 ) with oppositely opposed crankshafts ( 100 and 102 ) with one toward the rear grain cart and the other engine away from the rear grain cart, wherein the dual engines share a common radiator, single air conditioning condenser, single alternator, common batteries, common fuel tank and exhaust fluid tank; but have separate hot exhaust treatment system, separate hot exhaust manifolds, and separate side-mounted charge air coolers.

Claims (24)

1. An articulated harvesting combine ( 10 ) of a forward power processing unit (PPU, 12 ) and a rear grain cart ( 14 ), the improvement, which comprise:

the PPU carries:

(A) a front hydraulic cooler ( 48 ),

(B) a forwardly located cleaning charge air fan ( 50 ),

(C) a lower forwardly located cleaning fan assembly ( 54 ), and

(D) dual axially mounted first and second engines ( 36 , 38 ) with oppositely opposed crankshafts with one engine facing toward the rear grain cart and the other engine facing away from the rear grain cart, wherein the two first and second engines share:

(i) a common radiator ( 34 ),

(ii) a single air conditioning condenser ( 43 ),

(iii) a single alternator,

(iv) common batteries,

(vi) a common fuel tank, and

(vii) a exhaust fluid tank,

wherein each first and second engine has:

(a) a hot exhaust treatment system ( 40 ),

(b) a hot exhaust manifold ( 45 , 46 ), and

(c) a side-mounted charge air cooler ( 42 , 44 ); and

(E) a large capacity fan ( 32 ) located above the dual axially mounted first and second engines and pulling in air from above the PPU and onto the hot exhaust treatment systems for chaff/dust removal therefrom and for cooling, the large capacity fan also pushes air out through the side-mounted charge air coolers, and then onto the hot exhaust manifolds, then pushes air out through front hydraulic cooler ( 48 ), downwardly and forwardly into forwardly located cleaning charge air fan ( 50 ), and then downwardly into the lower forwardly located cleaning fan assembly.

2. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein both engines are diesel engines.

3. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 2 , wherein both diesel engines are supercharged or turbocharged.

4. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein exhaust assemblies for both engines face inwardly.

5. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein the second engine is clutched.

6. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein the second engine is adapted to be started first and warmed coolant flows from the second engine into the first engine for its starting.

7. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein the PPU carries a centrally located rotary threshing system having sides and the dual first and second engines are located partially above and to the sides of the centrally located rotary threshing system.

8. The articulated harvesting combine of claim 1 , wherein connected hydraulic pumps are associated with each engine to share hydraulic capacity when required.
