Abstract

A high-capacity pump fabricated with improved motor cooling and corrosion resistant components, and powered by a variable-speed brushless DC motor suitable for use with a wide variety of applications. A brushless 12V DC motor is controlled by a manual and wireless variable speed control means to provide unparalleled flow control. The motor is contained within the housing in a sealed cavity in the housing, wherein the cavity is filled with mineral oil which maximizes heat transfer to facilitate motor cooling. A PVC impeller is contained within a PVC section of the housing thereby creating a corrosion resistant impeller section. The pump of the present invention has achieved improved performance over known pumps, and is capable of delivering 4,500 gallons per hour (GPH) at 6 feet of head pressure, while only drawing 30 amps at 12 Volts DC.

Claims (19)

1. An electric pump system comprising:

an impeller housing having a water inlet and a water outlet, and an impeller disposed within said impeller housing;

a second housing in heat transfer communication with said impeller housing, said second housing containing a brushless DC electric motor having an output shaft connected to said impeller;

said second housing further including a microprocessor adapted to receive motor control signals, and a motor speed controller configured for controlling operation of said electric motor;

said second housing containing a quantity of mineral oil; and

a motor control apparatus adapted to send adjustable speed control signals to said motor to allow user adjustable control of pump output, wherein said motor control apparatus comprises said microprocessor, said motor speed controller, and a manually actuated speed control potentiometer.

2. The electric pump system according to claim 1 , wherein said motor control apparatus further includes a wireless transceiver electrically connected to said microprocessor, and a portable wireless communications device configured for wireless communication with said transceiver.

3. The electric pump system according to claim 2 , further including a downloadable software application installed on said wireless communications device.

4. An electric pump system comprising:

an impeller housing having a water inlet and a water outlet, and an impeller disposed within said impeller housing;

a motor housing connected in sealing engagement to said impeller housing, said motor housing containing a brushless DC electric motor, said motor having an output shaft projecting from said motor housing through a watertight seal and into said impeller housing, said output shaft connected to said impeller;

said motor housing containing mineral oil;

an electronics housing connected in sealing engagement to said motor housing, said electronics housing containing a microprocessor and a motor speed controller in electronic communication with said microprocessor;

said electronics housing containing mineral oil;

a wireless transceiver in electronic communication with said microprocessor;

a wireless communications device configured for wireless communication with said wireless transceiver, said wireless communications device adapted to transmit motor control signals to said wireless transceiver;

said wireless transceiver relaying said motor control signals to said microprocessor;

said microprocessor being responsive to said motor control signals to cause said motor speed controller to adjust the speed of said motor in response to said motor control signals.

5. The electric pump system according to claim 4 , further including a manually actuated speed control potentiometer in electrical communication with said microprocessor.
