Abstract

A smart functional vehicle component includes a vehicle component, a leather sheet fixed over a surface of the vehicle component, a flexible electronic circuit contacting an A-surface of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink, a light source that emits light when electrical power is supplied to the light source, the light source being electrically connected to the circuit, and a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit and over the light source. The pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit and the light source form being visible through the pigmented coating. Light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating. Light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators that convey information to a vehicle occupant.

Claims (72)

1. A smart functional vehicle component comprising:

a vehicle component,

a leather sheet fixed over a surface of the vehicle component,

a flexible electronic circuit contacting an A-surface of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink,

a light source that emits light when electrical power is supplied to the light source, the light source being electrically connected to the circuit, and

a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit and over the light source.

2. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit and the light source from being visible through the pigmented coating,

light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating, and

light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators that convey information to a vehicle occupant.

3. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 2 , wherein the information includes warnings, notices, alerts, instructions, a current or expected condition of an associated vehicle, of an occupant of the associated vehicle, of an environment of the associated vehicle, or combinations thereof.

4. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 2 , wherein:

the vehicle component is a vehicle dashboard,

the circuit is in electrical communication with a vehicle human machine interface, and

the functional vehicle component is configured to provide visual indicators in response to input to the vehicle human machine interface.

5. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 4 , wherein the input includes audible input.

6. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 5 , wherein the information includes the current time, or the current amount of fuel reserves for the associated vehicle.

7. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 2 , wherein:

the vehicle component is a steering wheel,

the circuit is in electrical communication with a vehicle electronic control unit, and

the information includes a directional indicator or a turn signal indicator.

8. The smart function vehicle component according to claim 2 , wherein:

the vehicle component is a steering wheel,

the circuit is a first circuit,

the smart functional vehicle component further includes a second flexible electronic circuit contacting the A-surface of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink,

the pigmented coating is arranged over the second circuit,

the second circuit extends around the entire circumference of the steering wheel and includes pressure sensors arranged around the entire circumference of the steering wheel, and

the second circuit is electrically isolated from the first circuit.

9. The smart function vehicle component according to claim 8 , wherein the pigmented layer inhibits or prevents the second circuit, including the pressure sensors, from being seen through the pigmented layer.

10. The smart function vehicle component according to claim 2 , wherein:

the circuit includes a capacitive switch that is operable to make or break a conductive path in the circuit; and

light emitted by the light source indicates a location of the capacitive switch.

11. The smart functional vehicle component according to claim 1 , further including an acrylic urethane anti-soiling component over the A-surface of the leather sheet, wherein the anti-soiling component is included a) as part of the pigmented coating, or b) as a top coat over the pigmented coating.

12. A vehicle system comprising:

a vehicle power system;

an electronic control unit electrically connected to the vehicle power system; and

a smart functional vehicle component including

a vehicle component,

a leather sheet fixed over a surface of the vehicle component,

a flexible electronic circuit contacting an A-surface of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink that is in electrical communication with the electronic control unit,

a micro light emitting diode that emits light when electrical power is supplied to the micro light emitting diode from the vehicle power system, the micro light emitting diode being electrically connected to the circuit, and

a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit and over the micro light emitting diode,

wherein the electronic control unit is configured to control operation of the functional vehicle component.

13. The vehicle system according to claim 12 , wherein:

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit and the light emitting diode from being visible through the pigmented coating,

light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating, and

light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators that convey information to a vehicle occupant.

14. The vehicle system according to claim 13 , wherein the information includes warnings, notices, alerts, instructions, a current or expected condition of an associated vehicle, of an occupant of the associated vehicle, of an environment of the associated vehicle, or combinations thereof.

15. The vehicle system according to claim 14 , wherein:

the vehicle component is a vehicle dashboard,

the circuit is in electrical communication with a vehicle human machine interface, and

the smart functional vehicle component is configured to provide visual indicators in response to audible input to the vehicle human machine interface.

16. The vehicle system according to claim 14 , wherein:

the vehicle component is a steering wheel, and

the information includes a directional indicator or a turn signal indicator.

17. The vehicle system according to claim 16 , wherein:

the circuit is a first circuit,
