Abstract

An agile optical imaging system for optical coherence tomography imaging using a tunable source comprising a wavelength tunable VCL laser is disclosed. The tunable source has long coherence length and is capable of high sweep repetition rate, as well as changing the sweep trajectory, sweep speed, sweep repetition rate, sweep linearity, and emission wavelength range on the fly to support multiple modes of OCT imaging. The imaging system also offers new enhanced dynamic range imaging capability for accommodating bright reflections. Multiscale imaging capability allows measurement over orders of magnitude dimensional scales. The imaging system and methods for generating the waveforms to drive the tunable laser in flexible and agile modes of operation are also described.

Claims (23)

1. An optical coherence tomography imaging system comprising:

a vertical cavity laser (VCL), wherein the VCL generates a single longitudinal mode lasing output that is tunable over an emission wavelength range for generating wavelength sweeps at a sweep repetition rate, wherein the laser cavity free spectral range is at least as wide as the emission wavelength range;

wherein the optical coherence tomography imaging system has the characteristics of being able to operate with an adjustment to at least one of:

i) an imaging range,

ii) an axial resolution,

iii) an axial scan rate.

2. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the optical coherence tomography imaging system operates at a substantially fixed axial scan rate.

3. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the optical coherence tomography imaging system operates at a substantially fixed imaging range.

4. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the optical coherence tomography imaging system operates at a substantially fixed axial resolution.

5. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , further comprising a clocking interferometer receiving at least a portion of the VCL output, a clocking detector coupled to the clocking interferometer to generate a clocking signal, and an electronic circuit to clock an A/D converter based on the clocking signal, the clocking interferometer having an adjustable optical delay to enable operation with at least two modes, wherein the modes differ in at least one of: axial scan rate, axial resolution, and imaging range.

6. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , further comprising a clocking interferometer receiving at least a portion of the VCL output, a clocking detector coupled to the clocking interferometer to generate a clocking signal, and an electronic circuit to clock an A/D converter based on the clocking signal, the clocking signal being multiplied or divided in frequency to enable operation with at least two modes, wherein the modes differ in at least one of: axial scan rate, axial resolution, and imaging range.

7. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment in axial resolution and axial scan rate is used to operate the OCT imaging system at two or more modes of:

a) higher resolution and slower axial scan rate or

b) lower resolution and higher axial scan rate.

8. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment in imaging range and axial scan rate is used to operate the OCT imaging system at two or more modes of:

a) longer imaging range and slower axial scan rate or

b) shorter imaging range and higher axial scan rate.

9. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment in axial resolution and imaging range is used to operate the OCT imaging system at two or more modes of:

a) higher resolution and shorter imaging range or

b) lower resolution and longer imaging range.

10. The optical coherence tomography imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the VCL is capable of at least one of:

a) operating over at least a 12% variation in the sweep repetition rate,

b) operating over at least a 10% variation in the emission wavelength range.
