Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer-readable storage media for dynamically adjusting nodes in a mesh network embedded in objects. The nodes, which are individually capable of sensing and/or transmitting data, are paired together such that when one node is active, the other node is collecting energy via solar, wind, or other energy collecting means. When a node reaches a certain energy level, the nodes can switch status, such that the passive node becomes active and vice versa. Exemplary objects in which the systems can be embedded include benches, receptacles, and light fixtures.

Claims (29)

1. A method comprising:

receiving an indication of a first energy level in a first access point and a current status of the first access point, the first access point being part of a pair of access points comprising the first access point co-located with a second access point in a mesh network, wherein one access point of the pair of access points operates in an active mode to communicate sensor data over the mesh network and a different access point of the pair of access points operates in an inactive mode to passively collect and store solar energy, and wherein the current status indicates the first access point operates in one of the active mode or the inactive mode;

identifying a second energy level in the second access point;

determining, based on the second energy level, the first energy level, and the current status of the first access point, that the current status of the first access point should be switched with a current status of the second access point; and

switching the current status of the first access point with the current status of the second access point by activating the second access point and deactivating the first access point.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each access point in the pair of co-located access points is one of a bench, a storage receptacle, a stoplight, a sign, a telephone pole, a post, a light, and a guardrail.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active mode includes operations to identify non-control data via a sensor.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the sensor is one of a pollution sensor, a light sensor, a weather sensor, and a movement sensor.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active mode includes operations to provision data to a mobile device of a public user by transmitting and receiving wireless signals.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the wireless signals are one of Wi-Fi signals, radio signals, and a cell-phone signals.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the current status of the first access point should be switched with the current status of the second access point further comprises determining, based on mesh network coverage data of access points other than the pair of co-located access points, that the current status of the first access point should be switched with the current status of the second access point.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein pairing the first access point with the second access point further comprises pairing the first access point with the second access point based on the first access point and the second access point being located within a threshold distance of one another.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the threshold distance is a city block.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the threshold distance is based on coverage areas of the first access point, the second access point, and at least one other access point in the mesh network.

11. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving an indication of a first energy level in a first access point and a current status of the first access point, the first access point being part of a pair of access points comprising the first access point co-located with a second access point in a mesh network, wherein one access point of the pair of access points operates in an active mode to communicate sensor data over the mesh network and a different access point of the pair of access points operates in an inactive mode to passively collect and store solar energy, and wherein the current status indicates the first access point operates in one of the active mode or the inactive mode;

identifying a second energy level in the second access point;

determining, based on the second energy level, the first energy level, and the current status of the first access point, that the current status of the first access point should be switched with a current status of the second access point; and

switching the current status of the first access point with the current status of the second access point by activating the second access point and deactivating the first access point.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein each access point in the pair of co-located access points is one of a bench, a trash can, a stoplight, a sign, a telephone pole, a light post, a light, and a guardrail.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the active mode includes operations to identify non-control data via a sensor.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor is one of a pollution sensor, a light sensor, a weather sensor, and a movement sensor.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the active mode includes operations to provision data to a mobile device of a public user by transmitting and receiving wireless signals.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the wireless signals are one of Wi-Fi signals, radio signals, and a cell-phone signals.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining that the current status of the first access point should be switched with the current status of the second access point further comprises determining, based on mesh network coverage data of access points other than the pair of co-located access points, that the current status of the first access point should be switched with the current status of the second access point.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein pairing the first access point with the second access point further comprises pairing the first access point with the second access point based on the first access point and the second access point being located within a threshold distance of one another.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the threshold distance is a city block.
