Abstract

A collar for a surgical access device includes an annular body laterally attachable to a cannula of the surgical access device. A spring is coupled to the annular body and movable between an uncompressed state and a compressed state. The spring is configured to manipulate the annular body between a first condition and a second condition to selectively fix the annular body at predetermined locations along the cannula or to laterally remove the annular body from the cannula while the cannula is supported within a patient's body.

Claims (29)

1. A surgical access system, comprising:

a surgical access device including:

a housing; and

a cannula extending from the housing;

and

a collar including:

an annular body laterally attachable to the cannula and including a first hook member and a second hook member; and

a spring coupled to the annular body and including a first arm and a second arm, the first arm received within the first hook member, the second arm received within the second hook member, the first and second arms positioned to move the first and second hook members relative to one another as the spring moves between an uncompressed state and a compressed state, wherein movement of the first and second hook members moves the annular body between a first condition and a second condition to selectively fix the annular body at predetermined locations along the cannula or to laterally remove the annular body from the cannula while the cannula is supported within a patient's body.

2. The surgical access system of claim 1 , wherein movement of the spring from the compressed state to the uncompressed state enables the annular body to frictionally secure to the cannula.

3. The surgical access system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second arms are opposed and positioned to pivot relative to one another as the spring moves between the uncompressed and compressed states.

4. The surgical access system of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first and second arms includes a restraining member that prevents over-compression of the first and second arms.

5. The surgical access system of claim 3 , wherein each of the first and second arms includes a leading end and a trailing end, wherein as the spring moves toward the compressed state, the trailing ends move toward one another and the leading ends move away from one another.

The surgical access system of claim 5 , wherein the annular body includes opposed end faces disposed in mirrored relation and positioned to define a vertical slit through the annular body, the vertical slit arranged to enable the annular body to separate and expose a central passage extending through the annular body as the spring moves toward the compressed state.

7. The surgical access system of claim 6 , wherein as the spring moves toward the uncompressed state, the trailing ends move away from one another and the leading ends move toward one another such that opposed end faces approximate one another and the annular body encloses the central passage.

8. The surgical access system of claim 1 , wherein the annular body includes a distal portion having conical configuration.

9. The surgical access system of claim 1 , wherein the annular body is formed of a flexible material.

10. The surgical access system of claim 9 , wherein the annular body includes soft rubber material.

11. A collar for a surgical access device, the collar comprising:

an annular body laterally attachable to a cannula of the surgical access device, the annular body including opposed hook members; and

a spring coupled to the annular body and including opposed arms received within the hook members, the opposed arms positioned to move the opposed hook members relative to one another as the spring moves between an uncompressed state and a compressed state, wherein movement of the opposed hook members moves the annular body between a first condition and a second condition to selectively fix the annular body at predetermined locations along the cannula or to laterally remove the annular body from the cannula while the cannula is supported within a patient's body.

12. The collar of claim 11 , wherein movement of the spring from the compressed state to the uncompressed state enables the annular body to frictionally secure to the cannula.

13. The collar of claim 11 , wherein the opposed arms pivot relative to one another as the spring moves between the uncompressed and compressed states.

14. The collar of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the opposed arms includes a restraining member that prevents over-compression of the opposed arms.

15. The collar of claim 13 , wherein each of the opposed arms includes a leading end and a trailing end, wherein as the spring moves toward the compressed state, the trailing ends move toward another and the leading ends move away from one another.

16. The surgical access device of claim 15 , wherein the annular body includes opposed end faces disposed in mirrored relation and positioned to define a vertical slit through the annular body, the vertical slit arranged to enable the annular body to separate and expose a central passage extending through the annular body as the spring moves toward the compressed state.

17. The collar of claim 16 , wherein as the spring moves toward the uncompressed state, the trailing ends move away from one another and the leading ends move toward one another such that opposed end faces approximate on another and the annular body encloses the central passage.

18. The collar of claim 11 , wherein the annular body includes a distal portion having conical configuration.

19. The collar of claim 11 , wherein the annular body is formed of a flexible material.

20. The collar of claim 19 , wherein the annular body includes soft rubber material.
