Abstract

A broadband antenna assembly including a coaxial cable, a lower limit radiating element, a higher limit radiating element, and a flexible outer sheath encasing the components of the assembly. The lower limit radiating element has a diameter greater than a diameter of an outer jacket of the coaxial cable, allowing the lower limit radiating element to surround the coaxial cable. The dipole formed by the lower limit radiating element is approximately ⅖ of the wavelength of the lower limit operating frequency. To capture higher frequencies, the higher limit radiating element includes a dipole that is approximately 30% shorter than that of the lower limit radiating element, allowing the antenna assembly to capture a wider bandwidth. By providing the radiating elements together with the coaxial cable, the antenna assembly removes the need for adapters and separately-connected component parts while providing a flexible outer sheath, improving mobile broadcasting applications.

Claims (18)

1. An antenna assembly comprising:

a cable including a jacket surrounding an internal conductor;

a flexible lower limit radiating element surrounding at least a portion of the cable, the lower limit radiating element having a diameter greater than a diameter of the jacket, the lower limit radiating element adapted to form and electrically couple to a dipole via an electric field, the dipole having a length between ¼ and ½ of a wavelength of a lower limit operating frequency, the lower limit radiating element adapted to electrically couple to at least one of a receiver and a transmitter;

a flexible higher limit radiating element surrounding at least a portion of the lower limit radiating element, the higher limit radiating element having a diameter greater than the diameter of the lower limit radiating element, the higher limit radiating element adapted to form and electrically couple to the dipole, the higher limit radiating element having a length that is approximately 30% less than a length of the lower limit radiating element; and

a continuous, flexible outer sheath surrounding the lower limit radiating element, the higher limit radiating element, and the cable, the outer sheath having a substantially uniform diameter from a first end through a second end, the diameter being greater than the diameter of the higher limit radiating element.

2. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the lower limit radiating element is a metallic sheath.

3. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the cable includes a shield surrounding the internal conductor, the jacket surrounding both the shield and the internal conductor; and

the lower limit radiating element electrically couples with the shield, thereby allowing a transfer of energy between the lower limit radiating element and the shield.

4. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the dipole has a length of ⅖ of the wavelength of the lower limit operating frequency.

5. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one magnetic element surrounding the cable jacket and in electric communication with the lower limit radiating element, the at least one magnetic element having a diameter greater than the diameter of the cable jacket.

6. The antenna assembly of claim 5 , wherein:

the at least one magnetic element is a ferrite having a relative magnetic permeability of approximately 125.

7. The antenna assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

an electrical connector coupled to the internal conductor and in electrical communication with the lower limit radiating element, the electrical connector adapted to couple the antenna assembly to at least one of the receiver and the transmitter.
