Abstract

The present disclosure provides, in one embodiment, an electronic smoking device comprising a mouthpiece; a vaporizer portion in communication with the mouthpiece; a filter cartridge assembly in communication with the mouthpiece; an inlet check valve; and an outlet check valve. The vaporizer portion comprises a heating element for heating a smoking material housed within the vaporizer portion. The inlet check valve permits air to be inhaled from the vaporizer portion into the mouthpiece, but substantially prohibits air from being exhaled through the mouthpiece into the vaporizer portion. The outlet check valve permits air to be exhaled through the mouthpiece into the filter cartridge assembly, but substantially prohibits air from being inhaled from the filter cartridge assembly into the mouthpiece.

Claims (43)

1. An electronic smoking device comprising:

a mouthpiece;

a vaporizer portion in communication with the mouthpiece, the vaporizer portion comprising a replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly and a heating element for heating a smoking material housed within the replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly;

a filter cartridge assembly in communication with the mouthpiece;

an inlet check valve contained within the replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly, wherein the inlet check valve permits air to be inhaled from the vaporizer portion into the mouthpiece and substantially prohibits air from being exhaled through the mouthpiece into the vaporizer portion; and

an outlet check valve which permits air to be exhaled through the mouthpiece into the filter cartridge assembly and substantially prohibits air from being inhaled from the filter cartridge assembly into the mouthpiece.

2. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the inlet check valve is a one-way valve which opens when a user inhales from the mouthpiece, and seals when the user exhales into the mouthpiece.

3. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the outlet check valve is a one-way valve which opens when a user exhales into the mouthpiece, and seals when the user inhales from the mouthpiece.

4. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the outlet check valve is contained within the filter cartridge assembly.

5. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the filter cartridge assembly is a replaceable component of the electronic smoking device.

6. A filter cartridge assembly for filtering emissions blown into an electronic smoking device, the filter cartridge assembly comprising:

an inlet cap in communication with a mouthpiece of the electronic smoking device for receiving air exhaled into the electronic smoking device;

a porous filter in communication with the inlet cap such that substantially all air that is blown into the filter cartridge assembly passes through the porous filter; and

an outlet check valve which permits air to be blown into the filter cartridge assembly and substantially prohibits air from being inhaled out of the filter cartridge assembly.

7. An electronic smoking device comprising:

a mouthpiece;

a vaporizer portion in communication with the mouthpiece, the vaporizer portion comprising

a replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly configured to house a smoking material,

a heating element for heating the smoking material housed within the replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly, and

an inlet check valve which permits air to be inhaled from the replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly into the mouthpiece and substantially prohibits air from flowing from the mouthpiece into the replaceable vaporizer cartridge assembly; and

a replaceable filter cartridge assembly in communication with the mouthpiece, the replaceable filter cartridge assembly comprising

one or more filters; and

an outlet check valve which permits air to be exhaled from the mouthpiece into the replaceable filter cartridge assembly and substantially prohibits air from being inhaled from the replaceable filter cartridge assembly into the mouthpiece.

8. The electronic smoking device of claim 1 , wherein the filter cartridge assembly comprises:

an outer body;

a porous filter housed within the outer body;

an inlet cap secured to a first end of the outer body; and

a vented outlet cap secured to a second end of the outer body.

9. The electronic smoking device of claim 8 , wherein the outlet check valve is secured between the outer body and the vent cap.

10. The electronic smoking device of claim 8 , wherein the porous filter comprises a mesh filter.

11. The electronic smoking device of claim 10 , wherein the mesh filter is a stainless steel filter or a polymer mesh filter.

12. The electronic smoking device of claim 10 , wherein the filter cartridge assembly further comprises a HEPA filter surrounding the mesh filter.

13. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 6 further comprising:

an outer body housing the porous filter; and

a vented outlet cap secured to a first end of the outer body, wherein

the inlet cap is secured to a second end of the outer body opposite the first end;

the outlet check valve permits air to be blown into the inlet cap, through the outer body, and out the vent cap, and

the outlet check valve substantially prohibits air from being inhaled into the vent cap, through the outer body, and out the inlet cap.

14. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein the porous filter comprises a mesh filter.

15. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 14 , wherein the mesh filter comprises at least one of a stainless steel material or a polymer material.

16. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 14 further comprising a HEPA filter surrounding the mesh filter.

17. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 6 , wherein the outlet check valve is a one-way valve which opens when a user exhales into the filter cartridge assembly, and seals when the user inhales on the filter cartridge assembly.

18. The filter cartridge assembly of claim 13 , wherein the outlet check valve is positioned within the outer body between the inlet cap and the vented outlet cap.
