Abstract

A mechanism of monitoring activity on a computer which may be applied to measuring the performance of the computer. The computer is configured to track a first set of information relating to at least a first occurrence of at least one scenario on the computer. At least some of the first set of information is evaluated to make a determination about the first occurrence of the scenario. Based on that determination, the computer may be configured to track a second set of information relating to at least a second occurrence of the scenario on the computer, in which the second set of to information includes at least some types of information not tracked in the first set of information. The second set of information can then be evaluated.

Claims (37)

1. A method performed on a computing device, the method comprising:

first determining, by the computing device, that a first duration of a first performance by the computing device of a computer-performed scenario exceeds a threshold;

collecting, by the computing device in response to the first determining that the first duration exceeds the threshold, extended information associated with a second performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario;

second determining, by the computing device, that a second duration of the second performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario exceeds the threshold;

sending, by the computing device in response to the second duration exceeding the threshold, the collected extended information to an analyzer; and

collecting, by the computing device prior to the first determining, non-extended information associated with the first performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario.

2. The method of claim 1 where the collected non-extended information comprises a smaller set of data than the collected extended information.

3. The method of claim 1 where production of the non-extended information consumes less computing resources of the computing device than those consumed to produce the extended information.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving,

by the computing device from the analyzer prior to the first determining and

the second determining, information that includes the threshold.

5. The method of claim 4 where the received information further includes a list of specific types of additional information to be included in the collected extended information relative to the collected non-extended information.

6. The method of claim 1 where the analyzer is separate from the computing device and where the sending is via a public wide area network (“WAN”).

7. A computing device comprising:

at least one processor;

memory that is coupled to the at least one processor and the includes computer-executable instructions that, based on execution by the at least one processor, configure the computing device to perform actions comprising: first determining that a first duration of a first performance by the computing device of a computer-performed scenario exceeds a threshold;

collecting, in response to the first determining that the first duration exceeds the threshold, extended information associated with a second performance by the computing device of the computer- performed scenario;

second determining that the second duration of a second performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario exceeds the threshold;

sending, in response to the second duration exceeding the threshold, the collected extended information to an analyzer; and

collecting, prior to the first determining, non-extended information associated with the first performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario.

8. The computing device of claim 7 where the collected non-extended information comprises a smaller set of data than the collected extended information.

9. The computing device of claim 7 where production of the non-extended information consumes less computing resources of the computing device than those consumed to produce the extended information.

10. The computing device of claim 7 , the actions further comprising receiving, from the analyzer prior to the first determining and the second determining, information that includes the threshold.

11. The computing device of claim 10 where the received information further includes a list of specific types of additional information to be included in the collected extended information relative to the collected non-extended information.

12. The computing device of claim 7 where the analyzer is separate from the computing device and where the sending is via a public wide area network (“WAN”).

13. At least one computer-readable storage device storing computer-executable instructions that, based on execution by a computing device, configure the computing device to perform actions comprising:

first determining, by the computing device, that a first duration of a first performance by the computing device of a computer-performed scenario exceeds a threshold;

collecting, by the computing device in response to the first determining that the first duration exceeds the threshold, extended information associated with a second performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario;

second determining, by the computing device, that a second duration of the second performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario exceeds the threshold;

sending, by the computing device in response to the second duration exceeding the threshold, the collected extended information to an analyzer; and

collecting, by the computing device prior to the first determining, non-extended information associated with the first performance by the computing device of the computer-performed scenario.

14. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 13 :

where the collected non-extended information comprises a smaller set of data than the collected extended information; or

where production of the non-extended information consumes less computing resources of the computing device than those consumed to produce the extended information.

15. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 13 , the actions further comprising receiving, by the computing device from the analyzer prior to the first determining and the second determining, information that includes the threshold.

16. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 15 where the received information further includes a list of specific types of additional information to be included in the collected extended information that is not included in the collected non-extended information.

17. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 15 where the analyzer is separate from the computing device and where the sending is via a public wide area network (“WAN”).
