Abstract

Liquid flow detection is described herein. One method for liquid flow detection includes heating a zone of liquid in a closed system, measuring changes in liquid temperature of the zone, and detecting a liquid flow pattern based on the measured changes in liquid temperature of the zone.

Claims (51)

1. The system for liquid flow anomaly detection, the system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory communicatively coupled to the at least one processor, the memory storing instructions which, when executed, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

during a first time period, heating liquid in a zone of a liquid distribution system to a threshold temperature and monitoring a temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, determining a first amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature;

during a second time period, heating the liquid in the zone to the threshold temperature and monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the second time period, determining a second amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature; and

responsive to determining a difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time, the difference indicating a liquid flow anomaly in the liquid distribution system, using a shut-off valve to stop the flow of the liquid in the liquid distribution system.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second amount of time is longer than the first amount of time.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first amount of time indicates a first liquid usage amount;

the second amount of time indicates a second liquid usage amount; and

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second liquid usage amount exceeds the first liquid usage amount.

4. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

providing an instruction to run or turn off at least one subcomponent of the liquid distribution system during the first time period.

5. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

determining, based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, a first pattern exhibited by the temperature change, the first pattern comprising a recovery pattern associated with the at least one subcomponent.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the liquid flow anomaly is a leak of at least some of the liquid from the liquid distribution system.

7. A computer-implemented method for liquid flow anomaly detection, the method performed by at least one processor, the method comprising:

during a first time period, heating liquid in a zone of a liquid distribution system to a threshold temperature and monitoring, by the at least one processor, a temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, determining, by the at least one processor, a first amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature;

during a second time period, heating the liquid in the zone to the threshold temperature and monitoring, by the at least one processor, the temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the second time period, determining, by the at least one processor, a second amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature; and

responsive to determining, by the at least one processor, a difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time, the difference indicating a liquid flow anomaly in the liquid distribution system, using a shut-off valve to stop the flow of the liquid in the liquid distribution system.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second amount of time is longer than the first amount of time.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

the first amount of time indicates a first liquid usage amount;

the second amount of time indicates a second liquid usage amount; and

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second liquid usage amount exceeds the first liquid usage amount.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

providing, by the at least one processor, an instruction to run or turn off at least one subcomponent of the liquid distribution system during the first time period.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising determining, based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, a first pattern exhibited by the temperature change, the first pattern comprising a recovery pattern associated with the at least one subcomponent.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the liquid flow anomaly is a leak of at least some of the liquid from the liquid distribution system.

13. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions which, when executed, instruct a computing device to perform operations for liquid flow anomaly detection, the operations comprising:

during a first time period, heating liquid in a zone of a liquid distribution system to a threshold temperature and monitoring a temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, determining a first amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature;

during a second time period, heating the liquid in the zone to the threshold temperature and monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone;

based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the second time period, determining a second amount of time for the liquid in the zone to reach the threshold temperature; and

responsive to determining a difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time, the difference indicating a liquid flow anomaly in the liquid distribution system, using a shut-off valve to stop the flow of the liquid in the liquid distribution system.

14. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein:

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second amount of time is longer than the first amount of time.

15. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein:

the first amount of time indicates a first liquid usage amount;

the second amount of time indicates a second liquid usage amount; and

determining the difference between the first amount of time and the second amount of time comprises determining that the second liquid usage amount exceeds the first liquid usage amount.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

providing an instruction to run or turn off at least one subcomponent of the liquid distribution system during the first time period.

17. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

determining, based on monitoring the temperature change in the liquid in the zone during the first time period, a first pattern exhibited by the temperature change, the first pattern comprising a recovery pattern associated with the at least one subcomponent.
