Medical impactor tool
A power tool includes an output member, a drive mechanism operable to perform work on the output member in one of a first mode or a second mode, and an actuator for activating the drive mechanism in the first mode or the second mode based upon an amount of time the actuator is depressed.
1. A method for operating a power tool, the method comprising:
actuating a switch of the power tool to initiate activation of a drive mechanism;
maintaining the switch in an actuated state for a predetermined amount of time or less to operate the drive mechanism in a first mode;
operating the drive mechanism for only a single drive cycle when in the first mode;
maintaining the switch in the actuated state for more than the predetermined amount of time to operate the drive mechanism in a second mode; and
operating the drive mechanism continuously in the second mode until the switch is released.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first mode is a single impact mode and the second mode is a multi-impact mode.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising initially operating the drive mechanism in the first mode through the predetermined amount of time of the switch being actuated, thereafter transitioning the drive mechanism from operating in the first mode to the second mode.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drive mechanism includes
a motor;
a screw drive operated by the motor in a reciprocating manner; and
a piston coupled to an output of the screw drive.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the drive mechanism further includes a movable cylinder within which the piston is located, and wherein activation of the drive mechanism includes driving the movable cylinder in a reciprocating manner for impacting an output member.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein activation of the drive mechanism further includes driving the piston in a forward direction to generate a vacuum within the movable cylinder, which accelerates the movable cylinder toward the output member for impacting the output member.
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the output member is coupled to a broach.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined amount of time is between 100 milliseconds and 200 milliseconds.
