Abstract

An endoscopic bipolar forceps includes an elongated shaft having opposing jaw members at a distal end thereof. The jaw members are movable relative to one another from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The forceps also includes a source of electrical energy connected to each jaw member such that the jaw members are capable of conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal. A generally tube-like cutter is included which is slidably engaged about the elongated shaft and which is selectively movable about the elongated shaft to engage and cut tissue on at least one side of the jaw members while the tissue is engaged between jaw members.

Claims (15)

1. A bipolar forceps, comprising:

a housing;

an elongated shaft extending distally from the housing;

an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the elongated shaft, the end effector assembly including a first jaw member and a second jaw member, the first jaw member pivotable relative to the second jaw member between a first position, wherein the first and second jaw members are spaced apart from one another, and a second position, wherein the first and second jaw members are closer to one another, the first and second jaw members each adapted to connect to an electrosurgical energy source, the second jaw member including at least one stop member associated with a sealing surface thereof, the at least one stop member electrically-insulated from the sealing surface of the second jaw member;

a movable handle connected to the housing and operable to pivot the first jaw member between the first position and the second position in response to proximal movement of the movable handle relative to the housing;

a knife advanceable at least partially through a knife channel defined in the sealing surface; and

a trigger assembly including a finger tab positioned distally adjacent the movable handle, the trigger assembly connected to the housing and operable to advance the knife in response to proximal movement of the finger tab relative to the housing.

2. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a handswitch disposed on the housing and actuatable to energize the jaw members.

3. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the first jaw member includes a sealing surface and wherein the knife channel is defined in both of the sealing surfaces.

4. The bipolar forceps according to claim 3 , further comprising a plurality of stop members disposed on either side of the knife channel on the sealing surface of at least one of the jaw members.

5. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a rotating assembly configured to rotate the elongated shaft relative to the housing about a longitudinal axis defined by the elongated shaft.

6. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one stop member includes an insulative material.

7. The bipolar forceps according to claim 6 , wherein the insulative material is injection-molded or overmolded.

8. The bipolar forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one stop member separates the sealing surfaces of the jaw members in the second position by a gap distance.

9. The bipolar forceps according to claim 8 , wherein the gap distance is from about 0.001 inches to about 0.005 inches.
