Adaptive sampling of heart sounds
A system and method to sense heart sounds with one or more implantable medical devices according to one or more signal processing parameters. The method alters one or more of the parameters as a function of one or more physiologic triggering events. The method then senses heart sounds with the one or more implantable medical devices according to at least the one or more altered signal processing parameters.
1. A system comprising:
a control circuit;
a sensor, coupled to the control circuit, the sensor configured to sense energy and produce a heart sound signal;
a heart sound detector, coupled to the sensor and the control circuit, the heart sound detector configured to detect heart sounds within the heart sound signal; and
a triggering circuit, coupled to the control circuit, configured to detect one or more physiologic events indicative of a change in physiology,
wherein the control circuit is configured to:
sample the heart sound signal using a heart sound signal sampling parameter;
identify a type of heart sound to sense as a function of the one or more detected physiologic events; and
change the heart sound signal sampling parameter according to the identified type of heart sound to sense.
2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein, to alter the heart sound signal sampling parameter, the control circuit is configured to select a signal sampling bit resolution based on the identified type of heart sound to sense, and
wherein the heart sound detector is configured to detect heart sounds according to the altered heart sound signal sampling parameter.
3. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to select a first signal sampling bit resolution when the identified heart sound is an S3 heart sound and to select a second different signal sampling bit resolution when the identified heart sound is an S1 heart sound.
