Abstract

Buried utility transmitters and associated locator devices, systems, and methods used for locating utility lines, pipes, and/or other conductors that are obscured from view are disclosed. In one embodiment a buried utility transmitter includes a module generating an output current for provision to the utility so as to generate a magnetic field for detection by a utility locator, with the output current signal having modulated signaling. The transmitter system may include a tray apparatus configured to be removably dockable to the transmitter module or element or a body or frame of the transmitter system.

Claims (26)

1. A transmitter system for providing current to a utility when performing a locate operation, comprising:

a body or frame;

a transmitter element disposed on or within the body or frame for generating an output current signal for provision to the utility to radiate a corresponding magnetic field from the utility for detection by a utility locator;

a satellite positioning system antenna;

a satellite positioning system receiver operatively coupled to an output of the satellite positioning system antenna to determine positional information about a position of the transmitter system;

a non-transitory memory to store the positional information in conjunction with data associated with the output current signal; and

a removably dockable tray apparatus adapted to be mechanically coupled to the body or frame.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tray apparatus includes one or more container holders including a paint canister receptacle feature for retaining one or more spray paint cans.

3. The system of claim 1 , including one or more antenna elements, wherein the tray apparatus includes corresponding one or more mounting elements for securing the antenna elements to the tray apparatus.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more antenna elements includes the satellite positioning system antenna and a local area network receiver antenna.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more antenna elements includes an antenna mast, and the antenna mast is removably attachable to the tray apparatus.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tray apparatus includes a ground stake receptacle retaining element.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter system further comprises an omni-directional induction apparatus including an omnidirectional antenna operatively coupled to an output of the transmitter to generate magnetic fields for inducing current flow in the utility.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the induction apparatus comprises a plurality of coils oriented to provide magnetic field signals in three orthogonal axes.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a direct connect clamp operatively coupled to an output of the transmitter so as to provide an electrical contact connection between the transmitter element and the utility.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the direct connect clamp is operatively coupled to the transmitter element through an accessory device clamp jack.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the direct connection clamp includes a polarization indicator.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the direct connection claim includes a utility type selector.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter element including electronic circuitry to simultaneously provide a plurality of output current signals.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of output current signals includes three or more signals and the three or more signals are simultaneously provided as outputs.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an omnidirectional induction antenna operatively coupled to the transmitter element to provide a magnetic field signal for inducing current into the utility.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the transmitter output current is provided to the omnidirectional induction antenna at one or more frequencies in the range of 810 kHz-80,190 kHz.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter output current is provided at a frequency in the range of 1-20 kHz.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more frequencies include a first frequency and one or more harmonics of first frequency.

19. The system of claim 1 , further including three or more clamps, wherein the frequency provided over a time interval to each of the clamps is different than a frequency provided to the other of the clamps in the same time interval.

20. The system of claim 1 , further including three or more clamps, wherein no current signal is provided over a time interval in one of the clamps while a current signal is provided to one or more of the other of the clamps in the same time interval.
