Abstract

Wakeboat hull control systems and methods are provided to monitor the orientation of the wakeboat hull in the surrounding water, and to automatically control wakeboat ballast components to achieve or maintain desired hull orientations. Systems and methods are provided to measure, store, and recall hull orientation. Systems and methods are also provided to enable automated action to improve the safety, automation, performance, convenience, and marketing advantage of wakeboat ballast systems.

Claims (43)

1. A wakeboat hull control method comprising:

providing a handheld tablet computer with a user interface, the handheld tablet computer having a wired or wireless connection with an operator console of the wakeboat;

providing at least one trim plate associated with the hull of the wakeboat;

providing at least one ballast compartment in the wakeboat;

providing at least one ballast pump associated with the ballast compartment of the wakeboat;

using the handheld tablet computer to configure both the trim plate and the ballast pump to primarily affect the rotation of the hull of the wakeboat about the pitch and/or roll axes of the hull;

providing processing circuitry configured to control both the trim plate and the fill status of the ballast compartment, the processing circuitry wired or wirelessly coupled to and communicating with the handheld tablet computer;

using the processing circuitry to acquire measurements of both a first tilt of a hull of a wakeboat about a first axis and a second tilt of the hull about a second axis that is non-parallel to the first axis;

using the user interface of the handheld tablet computer to selectively control the processing circuitry and to direct the processing circuitry to control the fill status of the ballast compartment and the configuration of the trim plate to change the one or both of the first and/or second tilt of the hull of the wakeboat from the acquired measurements.

2. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry is part of a system that interfaces wirelessly with the handheld tablet computer.

3. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 1 wherein the system further comprises trim plate power and sensing.

4. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 1 wherein the handheld tablet computer is comprised of a commercially available device.

5. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 1 wherein the processing circuitry is part of a system that has a wired connection with the handheld tablet computer.

6. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 5 wherein the system further comprises trim plate power and sensing.

7. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 1 wherein the handheld tablet computer comprises a memory.

8. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 7 wherein the memory comprises trim plate settings.

9. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 8 further comprising recalling the trim plate settings from the memory of the handheld tablet computer to configure the trim plate.

10. A wakeboat hull control system comprising:

a wakeboat having a hull and an operator console;

a handheld tablet computer having a wired or wireless connection with the operator console of the wakeboat, the handheld tablet computer having a graphical user interface;

at least one trim plate associated with the hull of the wakeboat;

at least ballast compartment in the wakeboat;

at least one ballast pump associated with the ballast compartment;

a first inclinometer operatively associated with the orientation of the hull of the wakeboat, wherein the first inclinometer is operatively associated with the orientation of the hull of the wakeboat to measure the tilt of the hull of the wakeboat around a first axis;

a second inclinometer operatively associated with the orientation of the hull of the wakeboat, wherein the second inclinometer is operatively associated with the orientation of the hull of the wakeboat to measure the tilt of the hull around a second axis, the first axis being non-parallel to the second axis;

both the trim plate and ballast pump being configured to primarily affect the orientation of the hull of the wakeboat about the pitch and/or roll axes of the hull;

processing circuitry coupled to and receiving measurements from both the first and second inclinometers and the processing circuitry coupled to the trim plate and the ballast pump such that the processing circuitry controls operation of the trim plate and the ballast pump, the processing circuitry wired or wirelessly coupled to and communicating with the handheld tablet computer; and,

the graphical user interface of the handheld tablet computer configured to provide selective control of the processing circuitry and configured to direct the processing circuitry to control the operation of the ballast pump and to control the configuration of the trim plate.

11. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 10 wherein the trim plate is attached to the hull of the wakeboat via a hinge.

12. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 10 wherein the hull comprises a transom having a lower edge, the axis of rotation of the hinge being substantially parallel with the lower edge of the transom at the point where the trim plate is attached to the hull.

13. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 10 wherein the axis of rotation of the hinge is substantially horizontal when the hull of the wakeboat is level with the surrounding water.

14. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 10 wherein the handheld tablet computer comprises a memory.

15. The wakeboat hull control apparatus of claim 14 wherein the memory comprises trim plate settings.

16. The wakeboat hull control method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a portable device interface on said handheld portable computer;

providing a portable external device, said portable external device having a memory;

copying at least one wake configuration from said handheld portable computer to said portable external device via said portable device interface;

moving the portable external device to a second wakeboat, said second wakeboat having at least one trim plate and at least one ballast pump associated with a ballast compartment;

copying the stored wake configuration from said portable device interface to a second handheld tablet computer, said second handheld tablet computer connected with an operator console on said second wakeboat;

using the copied wake configuration to configure both the trim plate and the ballast pump to primarily affect the rotation of the hull of the wakeboat about the pitch and/or roll axes of the hull.

17. The wakeboat control apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising:

a portable device interface on said handheld portable computer; and,

a portable external device, said portable external device configured to copy select contents of the memory of said handheld tablet computer via said portable device interface.
