Abstract

A system, apparatus, and method for intelligent selection of a communication channel. One embodiment of an IoT device comprises: a first set of one or more communication interfaces having first power consumption characteristics; a second set of one or more communication interfaces having second power consumption characteristics, the second power consumption characteristics comprising lower power requirements than the first power consumption characteristics; a connection manager to determine whether to transmit a message over a communication interface from the first set of one or more communication interfaces when an interface from the second set of one or more communication interfaces is unavailable and in accordance with a priority associated with the message.

Claims (38)

1. An Internet of Things (IoT) device comprising:

a first set of one or more communication interfaces having first power consumption characteristics;

a second set of one or more communication interfaces having second power consumption characteristics, the second power consumption characteristics comprising lower power requirements than the first power consumption characteristics;

a connection manager to determine whether to transmit a message over a communication interface from the first set of one or more communication interfaces when an interface from the second set of one or more communication interfaces is unavailable and in accordance with a priority associated with the message;

execution circuitry to execute an app to perform a function associated with the IoT device; and

one or more sensors coupled to an input port of the IoT device to provide data to be evaluated by the app, wherein the app is to generate the message and set the priority responsive to the evaluation of the data.

2. The IoT device of claim 1 wherein the first set of one or more interfaces comprise a Wi-Fi interface and/or a cellular data interface.

3. The IoT device of claim 2 wherein the second set of one or more interfaces comprise a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) interface.

4. The IoT device of claim 3 wherein the connection manager is to first determine if the message can be transmitted over the BLE interface and, if not, is to then determine whether to transmit the message over the Wi-Fi interface and/or cellular interface based on the priority associated with the message.

5. The IoT device of claim 4 wherein the priority is set based on an attribute associated with the message being set.

6. The IoT device of claim 1 wherein the data includes one or more Boolean values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one Boolean value being set to a first value.

7. The IoT device of claim 1 wherein the data includes one or more integer or floating point values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one of the integer or floating point values reaching a threshold.

8. A method comprising:

receiving an indication of a condition associated with an Internet of Things (IoT) device;

determining whether to transmit a message related to the condition over a communication interface from a first set of one or more communication interfaces when an interface from a second set of one or more communication interfaces is unavailable and in accordance with a priority associated with the message,

wherein the first set of one or more communication interfaces have first power consumption characteristics, the second set of one or more communication interfaces have second power consumption characteristics, and the second power consumption characteristics comprise lower power requirements than the first power consumption characteristics;

executing an app to perform a function associated with the IoT device; and

receiving data to be evaluated by the app from one or more sensors coupled to an input port of the IoT device, wherein the app is to generate the message and set the priority responsive to the evaluation of the data.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first set of one or more communication interfaces comprise a Wi-Fi interface and/or a cellular data interface.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the second set of one or more communication interfaces comprise a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) interface.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

initially determining whether the message can be transmitted over the BLE interface and, if not, then determining whether to transmit the message over the Wi-Fi interface and/or cellular interface based on the priority associated with the message.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the priority is set based on an attribute associated with the message being set.

13. The method of claim 8 wherein the data includes one or more Boolean values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one Boolean value being set to a first value.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein the data includes one or more integer or floating point values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one of the integer or floating point values reaching a threshold.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable medium having program code stored thereon which, when executed by a machine, causes the machine to perform the operations of:

receiving an indication of a condition associated with an Internet of Things (IoT) device; and

determining whether to transmit a message related to the condition over a communication interface from a first set of one or more communication interfaces when an interface from a second set of one or more communication interfaces is unavailable and in accordance with a priority associated with the message,

wherein the first set of one or more communication interfaces have first power consumption characteristics, the second set of one or more communication interfaces have second power consumption characteristics, and the second power consumption characteristics comprise lower power requirements than the first power consumption characteristics;

executing an app to perform a function associated with the IoT device; and

receiving data to be evaluated by the app from one or more sensors coupled to an input port of the IoT device, wherein the app is to generate the message and set the priority responsive to the evaluation of the data.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 wherein the first set of one or more communication interfaces comprise a Wi-Fi interface and/or a cellular data interface.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 16 wherein the second set of one or more communication interfaces comprise a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) interface.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 17 further comprising program code to cause the machine to perform the operations of:

initially determining whether the message can be transmitted over the BLE interface and, if not, then determining whether to transmit the message over the Wi-Fi interface and/or cellular interface based on the priority associated with the message.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 18 wherein the priority is set based on an attribute associated with the message being set.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 wherein the data includes one or more Boolean values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one Boolean value being set to a first value.

21. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 wherein the data includes one or more integer or floating point values and wherein the app is to generate the message responsive to at least one of the integer or floating point values reaching a threshold.
