Abstract

A grip member and a method of making such a grip member including at least a polymerized region with two or more polymers. The first and second polymers cooperate to each form a portion of the top surface of the region. The region may be combined with a substrate to form a sheet. The sheet may be formed into a grip interface having any of a number of shapes including a panel shape. In the case of a panel shaped grip interface, the panel can then be attached to an underlisting sleeve to form the grip. Some versions of such a grip reduce impact shock and provide a feeling of tackiness in the manner of a spirally wrapped polyurethane-felt grip while allowing the use of multiple colors being polymerized together. The grip may be easily installed onto a golf club shaft and may further accommodate the use of polymers including various different characteristics including level of tackiness or durometer.

Claims (15)

1. A multi-layered grip comprising:

an underlisting sleeve configured to attach to the handle of an article, the underlisting sleeve including a first end, a second end, and a coupling surface between the first and second ends;

a flexible substrate having an outer surface and an inner surface, the inner surface attached to the coupling surface of the underlisting sleeve;

a gripping portion covering the outer surface of the substrate, the gripping portion comprising:

an outer surface configured to be grasped by a user, the outer surface of the gripping portion comprising a semi-random pattern of at least a first colored polymer of a first color and a second colored polymer of a second color in which the at least first and second colors are visible and distinct on the outer surface of the gripping portion, the first colored polymer being applied such that it substantially covers the outer surface of the substrate, the second colored polymer being applied prior to polymerization of the first colored polymer such that the at least first and second colored polymers are polymerized simultaneously to form the outer surface of the gripping portion.

2. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the substrate is adhered to a substantially flat region of the underlisting sleeve.

3. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein both the first and the second colored polymers are in contact with the substrate.

4. The grip as in claim 3 , wherein both the first and the second colored polymers are bonded to the substrate.

5. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the substrate and the gripping portion are formed into a panel and attached to the underlisting sleeve with a longitudinal seam extending between the first and the second ends of the underlisting sleeve.

6. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the grip is configured for use with the handle of a golf club.

7. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a textile.

8. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a polymer.

9. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises ethylene-vinyl acetate.

10. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the first and second colored polymers each comprise polyurethane.

11. The grip as in claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the gripping portion further comprises a friction enhancing pattern.
