Abstract

An additive manufacturing apparatus includes a first vertically-extending support leg, a second vertically-extending support leg, and a gantry supported on the first and second support legs. The additive manufacturing apparatus also includes a work table movably supported beneath the gantry, a print head supported on the gantry, and a trim head supported on the gantry with the print head.

Claims (35)

1. An additive manufacturing apparatus, comprising:

a first vertically-extending support leg;

a second vertically-extending support leg;

a gantry supported on the first and second support legs;

a work table movably supported beneath the gantry;

a print head supported on the gantry; and

a trim head supported on the gantry with the print head.

2. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the work table includes a horizontally-movable surface.

3. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the print head is supported on a print carrier slidably connected to the gantry.

4. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the print head is supported on a trim carrier slidably connected to the gantry.

5. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the trim head is supported on a print carrier and the print carrier and trim carrier are secured to each other by a support member.

6. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the gantry extends across at least an entire width of the work table.

7. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the print head is supported on a print carrier slidably secured on a rail of the gantry that extends longer than a width of the work table.

8. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the work table includes a vertically-extending surface, the vertically-extending surface being movable in a direction away from the print head during operation of the print head or the trim head.

9. An additive manufacturing apparatus, comprising:

a fixed gantry;

a print head support on the gantry;

a trim head support on the gantry with the print head;

a vertical work table including a side surface configured to receive a bead of thermoplastic material extruded from the print head; and

a support member extending below the side surface of the vertical work table to support a part.

10. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the vertical work table is movable with respect to the support member.

11. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 10 , further including a horizontal work table connected to the vertical work table, wherein the horizontal work table and the vertical work table are movable together with respect to the support member during operation of the print head or the trim head.

12. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the support member extends through an opening of the vertical work table.

13. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the print head includes an angled support member extending from a gear pump to the print head.

14. The additive manufacturing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the angled support forms an angle of approximately 90° between a proximal end connected to the gear pump and a distal end connected to the applicator head.

15. An additive manufacturing method, comprising:

depositing a first layer of thermoplastic material on a surface using a print head supported on a gantry;

moving the surface with the deposited thermoplastic material away from the print head;

depositing one or more additional layers of thermoplastic material on the first layer of thermoplastic material;

supporting at least a portion of the first layer or one or more additional layers of thermoplastic material on a support member, and

further trimming at least one of the first or one or more additional layers of thermoplastic material with a trim head supported on the gantry with the print head.

16. The additive manufacturing method of claim 15 , wherein the surface is a vertically-extending surface.

17. The additive manufacturing method of claim 15 , further including positioning a trim head supported on the gantry with the print head above the print head during the depositing the one or more additional layers of thermoplastic material.

18. The additive manufacturing method of claim 17 , further including moving the print head and trim head together as a unit.

19. The additive manufacturing method of claim 15 , further including moving the surface, the first layer of thermoplastic material, and the one or more additional layers of thermoplastic material with respect to the support member.
