Abstract

Techniques to promote filtered messages based on historical reply rate are described. In one embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a messaging interface component operative to receive an incoming message; and transmit the incoming message to a configured delivery mailbox on a client device; and a destination mailbox configuration component operative to determine one or more connection categories between the sender account and the recipient account; determine a predicted reply rate for the incoming message based on the one or more connection categories, a recipient reply history for the recipient account, and a sender reply history for the sender account; configure the delivery mailbox for the incoming message based on the predicted reply rate; identify a most-prominent connection category of the one or more connection categories; and configure the incoming message with a banner message indicating the most-prominent connection category. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Claims (48)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving an incoming message addressed to a recipient from a sender at a messaging system;

determining that the sender is unknown to the recipient;

determining a channel through which the sender discovered the recipient;

generating a predicted reply probability that the recipient will respond to the incoming message;

configuring the message for delivery to a primary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability is above a pre-determined threshold and to a secondary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability falls below the pre-determined threshold; and

transmitting the incoming message only to the mailbox of the recipient for which the message has been configured;

wherein the predicted reply probability is based on an historic reply rate of the recipient for the channel, calculated as the total number of messages replied to which were received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel divided by the total number of messages received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the sender is unknown to the recipient when the sender is not in the recipient's list of contacts and when the sender and recipient have no pre-existing messaging history.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients with whom the sender has no pre-existing relationship.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the sender has discovered the recipient through multiple channels; and

increasing the predicted reply probability based on each of the determined channels.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the channels comprise a shared social networking group membership category, a friends-of-friends category, a shared calendar event category and a physical proximity category.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients discovered through the channel.

7. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor circuit on a device;

software, executing on the processor circuit, implementing:

a messaging interface component operative to:

receive an incoming message addressed to a recipient from a sender at a messaging system; and

transmit the incoming message only to a mailbox of the recipient for which the incoming message has been configured; and

a destination mailbox configuration component operative to:

determine that the sender is unknown to the recipient;

determine a channel through which the sender discovered the recipient;

generate a predicted reply probability that the recipient will respond to the message; and

configure the message for delivery to a primary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability is above a pre-determined threshold and to a secondary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability falls below the pre-determined threshold;

wherein the predicted reply probability is based on an historic reply rate of the recipient for the channel calculated as the total number of messages replied to which were received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel divided by the total number of messages received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the sender is unknown to the recipient when the sender is not in the recipient's list of contacts and when the sender and recipient have no pre-existing messaging history.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients with whom the sender has no pre-existing relationship.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the destination mailbox configuration component is further configured to:

determine that the sender and has discovered the recipient through multiple channels; and

increase the predicted reply probability based on each of the determined channels;

wherein the channels comprise a shared social networking group membership category, a friends-of-friends category, a shared calendar event category and a physical proximity category.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients discovered through the channel.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

receive an incoming message addressed to a recipient from a sender at a messaging system;

determine that the sender is unknown to the recipient;

determine a channel through which the sender discovered the recipient;

generate a predicted reply probability that the recipient will respond to the incoming message;

configure the message for delivery to a primary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability is above a pre-determined threshold and to a secondary mailbox of the recipient if the predicted reply probability falls below the pre-determined threshold; and

transmit the incoming message only to the mailbox of the recipient for which the message has been configured;

wherein the predicted reply probability is based on an historic reply rate of the recipient for the channel calculated as the total number of messages replied to which were received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel divided by the total number of messages received from senders who discovered the recipient through the channel.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients with whom the sender has no pre-existing relationship.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 comprising further instructions to cause the system to:

determine that the sender has discovered the recipient through multiple channels; and

increase the predicted reply probability based on each of the determined channels;

wherein the channels comprise a shared social networking group membership category, a friends-of-friends category, a shared calendar event category and a physical proximity category.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein the predicted reply probability is further based on the sender's history of receiving replies to messages sent to recipients having discovered via the channel.
