Abstract

A satellite system may include a reflector and a mast extending outwardly from the reflector. A radio frequency (RF) assembly may be carried by a distal end of the mast and include a conductive waveguide body having an RF cavity therein coupled with the reflector and a pin-receiving opening therein. An RF circuit module may include a housing carried by the conductive waveguide body, RF circuitry contained within the housing, and a signal coupling pin coupled to the RF circuitry and extending through the pin-receiving opening into the RF cavity.

Claims (29)

1. A satellite system comprising:

a reflector;

a mast extending outwardly from the reflector; and

a radio frequency (RF) assembly carried by a distal end of the mast, the RF assembly comprising

a conductive waveguide body having an RF cavity therein coupled with the reflector, and having a pin-receiving opening therein, and

an RF circuit module comprising a housing carried by the conductive waveguide body, RF circuitry contained within the housing, and a signal coupling pin coupled to the RF circuitry and extending through the pin-receiving opening into the RF cavity.

2. The satellite system of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a hermetically sealed housing.

3. The satellite system of claim 1 wherein the RF circuitry comprises an RF signal amplifier.

4. The satellite system of claim 3 wherein the RF signal amplifier comprises an integrated circuit Low Noise Amplifier (LNA).

5. The satellite system of claim 1 wherein the RF assembly comprises an RF cable connector carried by the conductive waveguide body and coupled to the RF circuitry.

6. The satellite system of claim 5 wherein the mast has a passageway therein; and comprising a cable coupled to the RF cable connector and extending through the passageway.

7. The satellite system of claim 1 comprising a subreflector carried by the distal end of the mast and aligned between the reflector and the RF assembly.

8. The satellite system of claim 7 comprising a horn coupled to the conductive waveguide body and directed toward the subreflector.

9. A radio frequency (RF) assembly for a satellite system including a reflector, the RF assembly comprising:

a conductive waveguide body having an RF cavity therein to be coupled with the reflector, and having a pin-receiving opening therein; and

an RF circuit module comprising a housing carried by the conductive waveguide body, RF circuitry contained within the housing, and a signal coupling pin coupled to the RF circuitry and extending through the pin-receiving opening into the RF cavity.

10. The RF assembly of claim 9 wherein the housing comprises a hermetically sealed housing.

11. The RF assembly of claim 9 wherein the RF circuitry comprises an RF signal amplifier.

12. The RF assembly of claim 11 wherein the RF signal amplifier comprises an integrated circuit Low Noise Amplifier (LNA).

13. The RF assembly of claim 9 wherein the RF circuitry comprises an RF signal limiter.

14. The RF assembly of claim 9 wherein the RF assembly comprises an RF cable connector carried by the conductive waveguide body and coupled to the RF circuitry.

15. A method for making a radio frequency (RF) assembly for a satellite system including a reflector, the method comprising:

forming a conductive waveguide body having an RF cavity therein to be coupled with the reflector, and having a pin-receiving opening therein; and

coupling an RF circuit module to the conductive waveguide body, the RF circuit module comprising a housing carried by the conductive waveguide body, RF circuitry contained within the housing, and a signal coupling pin coupled to the RF circuitry and extending through the pin-receiving opening into the RF cavity.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the housing comprises a hermetically sealed housing.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the RF circuitry comprises an RF signal amplifier.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the RF signal amplifier comprises an integrated circuit Low Noise Amplifier (LNA).

19. The method of claim 15 wherein the RF circuitry comprises an RF signal limiter.

20. The method of claim 15 wherein the RF assembly comprises an RF cable connector carried by the conductive waveguide body and coupled to the RF circuitry.
