Abstract

A vena cava filter is described, having one or more frame members or an elongated member arranged in helical fashion. A plurality of filaments connect frame members or portions of the elongated member. The filaments may be made of suture material. Hooks may be placed on a free end of the filaments, along the length thereof, or on one or more frame members to engage the blood vessel wall and anchor the filter. A retrieval member may be positioned on the filter to facilitate withdrawal of the filter from the blood vessel.

Claims (42)

1. A blood vessel filter for deployment in a blood vessel having a blood vessel wall, comprising:

a) a planar circumferentially extending rounded filter frame having an open interior portion and a first diameter;

b) multiple transverse filaments that extend from one portion of said frame to another, wherein said filaments are circumferentially spaced around said frame and each of said filaments spans the open interior portion;

c) wherein said filaments form a mesh like surface that allows fluid and blood cells to pass through but that captures blood clots;

d) a catheter having a lumen with a lumen diameter that is smaller than said first diameter;

e) said filter frame having a deployed configuration wherein said frame is expanded into a generally circular configuration having the first diameter and a storage configuration wherein said filter frame is formed into a generally circular configuration having a second diameter that is smaller than said deployed configuration; wherein said filter frame is twisted into a figure eight configuration and bent at the midpoint to obtain the storage configuration; and wherein the storage configuration enables the filter frame to occupy said catheter lumen; and

f) one or more anchors on said frame that are positioned to anchor said frame to a blood vessel wall.

2. The filter of claim 1 wherein the frame is generally circular.

3. The filter of claim 1 wherein at least one said anchor is a hook.

4. The filter of claim 1 wherein the mesh like surface has an open area ratio of at least 10:1.

5. The filter of claim 1 wherein there is a pressure drop across the filament, and the pressure drop across the filament is less than 0.2 inches Hg.

6. The filter of claim 1 wherein the catheter is sized and shaped to deliver the filter either from a jugular vessel or a femoral vessel.

7. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filaments are of a suture material.

8. The filter of claim 1 wherein there are multiple, circumferentially spaced apart anchors.

9. The filter of claim 1 wherein at least some of the filaments are radially extending.

10. The filter of claim 1 wherein at least some of the filaments are generally parallel.

11. A blood vessel filter for deployment in a blood vessel having a blood vessel wall, comprising:

a) a planar circumferentially extending rounded filter frame having an open interior portion;

b) multiple filaments that extend from said frame and into said interior portion;

c) wherein said filaments form a mesh structure in said open interior portion that allows fluid and blood cells to pass through but that captures blood clots;

d) a catheter having a lumen having a lumen diameter;

e) said filter frame having a first deployed configuration, wherein said frame is expanded to a first larger diameter and will not fit in said catheter lumen, and a second storage configuration that has a second smaller diameter that is smaller than said first larger diameter of said deployed configuration; and

f) wherein in said storage configuration said filter has been twisted and bent at the midpoint into a second smaller filter diameter that is about the same diameter as said lumen diameter, enabling the filter frame to occupy said catheter lumen.

12. The filter of claim 11 wherein the frame is an endless loop.

13. The filter of claim 11 wherein at least one anchor is mounted on said frame.

14. The filter of claim 13 wherein there are multiple, circumferentially spaced apart anchors.

15. The filter of claim 11 wherein the mesh structure has an open area ratio of at least 10:1.

16. The filter of claim 11 wherein there is a pressure drop across the filaments, and the pressure drop across the filaments is less than 0.2 inches Hg.

17. The filter of claim 11 wherein the catheter is sized and shaped to deliver the filter either from a jugular vessel or a femoral vessel.

18. The filter of claim 11 wherein the filaments are of a suture material.

19. A method of deploying a blood vessel filter in a blood vessel having a blood vessel wall, wherein the filter comprises:

a) a planar circumferentially extending rounded filter frame having an open interior portion and a first diameter;

b) multiple transverse filaments that extend from one portion of said frame to another, circumferentially spaced around said frame and each of said filaments spans the open interior portion;

c) wherein said filaments form a mesh like surface that allows fluid and blood cells to pass through but that captures blood clots;

d) a catheter having a lumen with a lumen diameter that is smaller than said first diameter;

e) said filter frame having a deployed configuration wherein said frame is expanded into the first diameter and a storage configuration having a diameter that is smaller than said first diameter of said deployed configuration; and

f) one or more anchors on said frame that are positioned to anchor said frame to a blood vessel wall;

and wherein the method comprises the steps of:

moving said filter frame from said deployed configuration to said storage configuration by twisting said frame into a figure eight configuration, said figure eight configuration having a midpoint, and

bending the frame at the midpoint into a smaller generally circular configuration that enables the filter frame to occupy said catheter lumen,

loading the filter into said catheter for delivery to the blood vessel.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the filter frame is generally circular.
