Abstract

A timer for processing data blocks is proposed for a receiver of a mobile communications system. If the timer is not running, the timer is started based a data block. The data block has a sequence number higher than a sequence number of another data block that was first expected to be received. If the timer is stopped or expires, the timer is based on a highest sequence number of a data block among data blocks that cannot be delivered to a higher entity. The timer can be used to prevent a stall condition in mobile communications.

Claims (20)

1. A method of operating a timer for processing data blocks in a receiver of a mobile communications system, the method comprising:

based on the timer not running, starting, by the receiver, the timer based on a sequence number of a data block being higher than a sequence number of another data block that was first expected to be received;

based on the timer expiring, re-starting, by the receiver, the timer based on a highest sequence number of a data block among data blocks that cannot be delivered to a higher entity; and

based on the re-started timer expiring, delivering, by the receiver, to the higher entity, correctly received data blocks up to a next not received data block.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the next not received data block is a data block that is not received in the receiver and immediately follows the correctly received data blocks.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein sequence numbers of the correctly received data blocks sequentially follow a sequence number for which the timer was re-started.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data blocks are stored in a buffer and processed by a data link layer of the receiver.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data blocks are stored in a buffer and processed by a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of the receiver.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein no additional timer is started in the receiver during the timer is running.

7. A receiver in a mobile communications system, the receiver comprising:

a buffer configured to store data blocks; and

a processor coupled to the buffer and configured to:

based on the timer not running, start a timer based on a sequence number of a data block being higher than a sequence number of another data block that was first expected to be received;

based on the timer expiring, re-start the timer based on a highest sequence number of a data block among data blocks that cannot be delivered to a higher entity; and

based on the re-started timer expiring, deliver, to the higher entity, correctly received data blocks up to a next not received data block.

8. The receiver of claim 7 , wherein the next not received data block is a data block that is not received in the receiver and immediately follows the correctly received data blocks.

9. The receiver of claim 7 , wherein sequence numbers of the correctly received data blocks sequentially follow a sequence number for which the timer was re-started.

10. The receiver of claim 7 , wherein the data blocks are processed by a data link layer of the receiver.

11. The receiver of claim 7 , wherein the data blocks are processed by a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of the receiver.

12. The receiver of claim 7 , wherein no additional timer is started in the receiver during the timer is running.
