Abstract

A patient monitor can noninvasively measure a physiological parameter using sensor data from a nose sensor configured to be secured to a nose of the patient. The nose sensor can include an emitter and a detector. The detector is configured to generate a signal when detecting light attenuated by the nose tissue of the patient. An output measurement of the physiological parameter can be determined based on the signals generated by the detector. The nose sensor can include an inner prong and an outer prong to assist the nose sensor in securing to a patient's nose. The detector can be coupled to an inner post of the inner prong and can be configured to secure to an interior or exterior portion of the patient's nose.

Claims (38)

1. A noninvasive physiological monitoring device configured to measure a physiological parameter of a user, the device comprising:

an inner prong configured to be positioned on one of an inner or outer side of a nose of the user;

an outer prong configured to be positioned on another one of the inner or outer side of the nose of the user, wherein the outer prong comprises a first post and a second post spaced from the first post;

a coupling portion connected to the inner prong and the first and second posts of the outer prong, the coupling portion configured to maintain a rigidity of the noninvasive physiological monitoring device and further configured to space the inner prong from the first and second posts of the outer prong, wherein the inner prong is configured to bend away from the first and second posts of the outer prong when the noninvasive physiological monitoring device is secured to the nose of the user;

an emitter configured to emit light of one or more wavelengths into the nose of the user, wherein the emitter is coupled to the outer prong; and

a detector configured to detect the emitted light from the emitter after the emitted light passes through tissue of the nose of the user, wherein the detector is coupled to the inner prong.

2. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein, when the device is secured to the nose of the user, the device holds the detector proximate to one of the inner or outer sides of the user's nose without adhesives.

3. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein portions of the inner and outer prongs are curved toward each other to secure the device to the nose.

4. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein portions of the inner and outer prongs are biased inwardly toward each other to secure the device to the nose.

5. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to secure to an alar of the nose of the user.

6. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising a flexible circuit electrically coupling the emitter and the detector.

7. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 6 , wherein a first portion of the flexible circuit is positioned within an interior portion of the noninvasive physiological monitoring device and a second portion of the flexible circuit is positioned outside of the interior portion of the noninvasive physiological monitoring device.

8. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 7 , wherein the interior portion is within the inner prong.

9. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein, when the device is secured to the nose of the user, the emitter and the detector are aligned.

10. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the inner prong comprises a first end connected to the coupling portion and a second end opposite the first end, and wherein the second end of the inner prong is coupled with the detector.

11. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the inner prong is spaced from the first and second posts along a first direction, and wherein the second and third posts are spaced from one another along a second direction, the first direction being perpendicular to the second direction.

12. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising a flexible flap having a first end connected to the coupling portion and a second end opposite the first end, the second end of the flexible flap coupled to the emitter.

13. The noninvasive physiological monitoring device of claim 12 , wherein the flexible flap is positioned between and is spaced from both of the first and second posts.

14. A method of measuring a physiological parameter of a user, the method comprising:

transmitting light, by an emitter of a nose sensor, of one or more wavelengths through tissue of a nose of the user to a detector;

detecting, with the detector of the nose sensor, light attenuated by the tissue of the nose of the user;

generating an output signal, with the detector, based on the detected light; and

determining a measurement of the physiological parameter based on the output signal;

wherein the nose sensor includes:

an inner prong configured to be positioned on one of an inner or outer side of the nose of the user;

an outer prong configured to be positioned on another one of an inner or outer side of the nose of the user, wherein the outer prong comprises a first post and a second post spaced from the first post; and

a coupling portion connected to the inner prong and the first and second posts of the outer prong, the coupling portion configured to maintain a rigidity of the nose sensor and further configured to space the inner prong from the first and second posts of the outer prong, wherein the inner prong is configured to bend away from the first and second posts of the outer prong when the nose sensor is secured to the nose of the user.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising diffusing the light transmitted by the emitter of the nose sensor before the emitted light enters the tissue of the nose of the user using a diffuser.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising focusing the light transmitted by the emitter of the nose sensor into the detector after the light has passed through the tissue of the nose of the user using a lens.

17. A noninvasive physiological monitoring device configured to measure a physiological parameter of a user, the device comprising:

a first post configured to be positioned on one of an inner or outer side of a nose of the user;

a second post and a third post, the second and third posts spaced from one another and configured to be positioned on the other one of the inner or outer side of the nose of the user;

a coupling portion connected to the first, second, and third posts and configured to space the first post from both of the second and third posts, wherein the first post is configured to bend away from the second and third posts when the noninvasive physiological monitoring device is secured to the nose of the user;

an emitter configured to emit light of one or more wavelengths into tissue of the nose of the user, wherein the emitter is coupled to at least one of the second post and the third post; and
