Abstract

The invention provides a golf club head with an openwork (e.g., lattice-like or trellis-like) internal structural element that provides strength and stiffening at key points of the club head and/or attenuates sound while adding little to the overall mass due to the defined or irregular patterns of holes, piercings, gaps, or apertures through surfaces of the material. A golf club head may be given an openwork internal rib that reinforces regions of high strain, thereby minimizing material fatigue and preventing early breakage of the club head.

Claims (35)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a ball-striking face;

a crown and a sole extending back from the ball-striking face and cooperating to define an enclosed hollow body;

a hosel extending upwards from a heel side of the hollow body when the golf club head is at address; and

a support member disposed within the hollow body;

wherein the support member comprises a wall having at least a first side, an opposing second side, a first edge, a free edge, and an openwork structure, wherein the first edge of the wall is at least partially connected to an interior surface of the sole, the first and second sides of the wall extend toward the crown from the first edge to the free edge, wherein the openwork structure includes a plurality of apertures that extend through the first and second sides of the wall, and wherein at least one of the plurality of apertures is defined by an aperture edge that is shared and overlaps with at least two other apertures in the plurality of apertures, and wherein the support member defines a buttress extending between an inside surface of the hosel and the interior surface of the sole.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the wall defines a rib that is fastened at least partially to the interior surface of the sole.

3. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the support member is 3D printed.

4. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the support member comprises a metal.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the support member is welded to the interior surface of the sole.

6. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the openwork structure defines a Voronoi pattern.

7. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the golf club head is a driver-style club head, wherein the crown comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of metal, composite, plastic, thermoplastic, and carbon fiber, wherein the sole comprises a first metal, and wherein the support member is fastened to an inside surface of the sole and the openwork structure comprises a 3D printed second metal.

8. The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising an adjustment mechanism for adjusting a feature of the golf club head.

9. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the adjustment mechanism includes one or more attachment points for removable features.

10. The golf club head of claim 9 , further comprising at least one removable weight removably attached to at least one of the one or more attachment points such that the adjustment mechanism allows for adjustment of a mass or mass distribution of the golf club head.

11. A golf club head comprising:

a ball-striking face;

a crown and a sole extending back from the ball-striking face and cooperating to define an enclosed hollow body;

a hosel extending upwards from a heel side of the hollow body when the golf club head is at address; and

a 3D printed support member disposed within the hollow body,

wherein the support member comprises a wall including at least a first side, a second side, a first edge, a second edge, a first free edge, and a second free edge, and having an openwork structure, wherein the first edge is at least partially connected to an interior surface of the sole, wherein the first and second sides of the wall extend from the first edge toward the crown to the first free edge, the second edge extending between ends of the first edge and the first free edge and is at least partially fastened to a portion of the hosel, and the second free edge linearly extending between ends of the first free edge and the first edge opposing the second edge, wherein the first edge is contiguous with the second edge and the second free edge, wherein the first free edge is contiguous with the second edge and the second free edge, and wherein the openwork structure includes a plurality of apertures that extend through the first and second sides of the wall.

12. The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the openwork structure defines a mesh or lattice structure.

13. The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the wall defines a rib extending along the interior surface of the sole.

14. The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the 3D printed support member comprises a metal.

15. A golf club head comprising:

a ball-striking face;

a crown and a sole extending back from the ball-striking face and cooperating to define an enclosed hollow body;

a hosel extending upwards from a heel side of the hollow body when the golf club head is at address; and

a support member disposed within the hollow body and partially fastened to an interior portion of the hosel,

wherein the support member comprises a wall including at least a first edge, a second edge, and a first free edge, a second free edge, and an openwork structure, wherein the first edge is at least partially fastened to an interior surface of the sole, wherein the wall extends from the first edge toward the crown to the first free edge, the second edge extending between ends of the first edge and the first free edge and is at least partially fastened to the interior portion of the hosel, wherein the first edge is contiguous with the second edge and the second free edge, and wherein the openwork structure includes a plurality of apertures that extend entirely through the wall.

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the openwork structure defines a mesh or lattice structure.

17. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the wall defines a rib extending along the interior surface of the sole.

18. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the support member comprises a metal.

19. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the support member is 3D printed.

20. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the second free edge linearly extends between ends of the first free edge and the first edge opposing the second edge.
