Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads with energy storage characteristics are presented herein. In some embodiments, a golf club head comprises a hollow body comprising a strikeface, a heel region, a toe region opposite the heel region, a sole, a top rail and an inflection point. The inflection point provides increase bending of the strikeface thereby providing performance enhancement over clubs without an inflection point.

Claims (109)

1 . A golf club head, comprising:

a strikeface, comprising:

a strikeface exterior surface;

a strikeface interior surface;

a strikeface center region including a strikeface center portion;

a strikeface high region located above the strikeface center region;

a strikeface low region located below the strikeface center region and including a strikeface bottom;

a strikeface periphery surrounding the strikeface center portion;

a strikeface thickness, measured perpendicular to the strikeface from the strikeface exterior surface to the strikeface interior surface, comprising a greatest thickness at the strikeface center portion and a reduced thickness at the strikeface periphery, wherein the strikeface thickness never increases from the strikeface center portion to the strikeface periphery;

a strikeface toe edge;

a strikeface end opposite the strikeface toe edge;

a heel region adjacent the strikeface end;

a toe region opposite the heel region and adjacent the strikeface toe edge;

a hosel, adjacent the heel region;

a rear opposite the strikeface and comprising a rear upper region and a rear lower region;

a sole extending between the heel region and the toe region and coupling the strikeface low region with the rear, wherein the sole comprises;

a cascading sole portion spaced rearward of the strikeface and having a varying thickness, measured perpendicular from a sole external surface to a sole internal surface, the cascading sole portion comprising a first tier having a first tier thickness, a second tier having a second tier thickness less than the first tier thickness, and a first tier transition region coupling the first tier to the second tier; and

a uniform thinned region extending from the strikeface bottom to the cascading sole portion, the uniform thinned region comprising a uniform thinned region thickness, measured perpendicular from the sole external surface to the sole internal surface, that is constant from the strikeface bottom to the cascading sole portion;

a top rail opposite the sole, extending between the heel region and the toe region, and coupling the strikeface high region with the rear;

wherein an internal surface of the strikeface, an internal surface of the rear, the internal surface of the sole, and an internal surface of the top rail define a closed internal cavity;

a crease defines a junction of the rear upper region and the rear lower region;

a hosel transition region disposed in the heel region and extending from the hosel to the strikeface end, the hosel transition region comprising:

a hosel junction bordering the hosel;

a transition junction located intermediate the hosel junction and the strikeface end;

a hollow portion extending from the strikeface end to the transition junction and defining a void in fluid communication with the closed internal cavity;

a solid portion extending from the transition junction to the hosel junction; and

a plurality of ribs disposed in the void of the hollow portion, wherein each rib of the plurality of ribs:

extends from the transition junction and in a direction from the transition junction to the strikeface end; and

does not touch the internal surface of the strikeface.

2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein:

the rear upper region comprises a rear wall, a top wall, and a back wall;

the rear wall is below and adjacent the top rail, the top wall is below and adjacent the rear wall, and the back wall is below and adjacent the top wall;

the top wall is curved toward the strikeface, away from the top rail such that an interior surface of the top wall has a concave shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

the back wall has a back wall interior surface comprising a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

a first inflection point defines a junction between the top wall and the back wall where the interior surface of the rear upper region transitions from a concave to a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

the rear lower region comprises a bottom incline and a lower exterior wall;

the bottom incline is adjacent and below the back wall;

the bottom incline extends from the first inflection point in a direction away from the strikeface;

the bottom incline has bottom incline interior surface comprising has a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

a second inflection point defines the crease formed between the rear upper region and the rear lower region; and

the lower exterior wall is adjacent and below the bottom incline, and adjacent the sole.

3 . The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the golf club head further comprises:

a third inflection point defining a junction between the bottom incline and the lower exterior wall where the bottom incline interior surface has a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity changes direction.

4 . The golf club head of claim 2 , further comprises:

a lower angle measured from between the bottom incline and the lower exterior wall, the lower angle is less than 180 degrees; and

an inflection angle measured between the back wall and the bottom incline, the inflection angle between 95 degrees and 150 degrees.

5 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein each rib of the plurality of ribs comprises:

a width measured in a direction from the top rail to the sole;

a length measured in a direction from the transition junction to an end of the rib located nearest the strikeface end; and

the width varies across the length.

6 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the golf club head further comprises a polymer material that at least partially fills the closed internal cavity.

7 . The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein the polymer material comprises a weight between 2 grams and 7 grams.

8 . The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first aperture located on the toe region configured to receive a toe weight; and

a second aperture located in the hosel configured to receive a tip weight.

9 . The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the toe weight and the tip weight comprise a weight ranging between 2 grams to 7 grams.

10 . A golf club head, comprising:

a strikeface, comprising:

a strikeface exterior surface;

a strikeface interior surface;

a strikeface center region including a strikeface center portion;

a strikeface high region located above the strikeface center region;

a strikeface low region located below the strikeface center region and including a strikeface bottom;

a strikeface periphery surrounding the strikeface center portion;

a strikeface thickness, measured perpendicular to the strikeface from the strikeface exterior surface to the strikeface interior surface, comprising a greatest thickness at the strikeface center portion and a reduced thickness at the strikeface periphery, wherein the strikeface thickness never increases from the strikeface center portion to the strikeface periphery;

a strikeface toe edge;

a strikeface end opposite the strikeface toe edge;

a heel region adjacent the strikeface end;

a toe region, opposite the heel region and adjacent the strikeface toe edge;

a hosel, adjacent the heel region;

a rear opposite the strikeface and comprising a rear upper region and a rear lower region;

a sole extending between the heel region and the toe region and coupling the strikeface low region with the rear, wherein the sole comprises:

a cascading sole portion spaced rearward of the strikeface and having a varying thickness, measured perpendicular from a sole external surface to a sole internal surface, the cascading sole portion comprising a first tier having a first tier thickness, a second tier having a second tier thickness less than the first tier thickness, and a first tier transition region coupling the first tier to the second tier; and

a uniform thinned region extending from the strikeface bottom to the cascading sole portion, the uniform thinned region comprising a uniform thinned region thickness, measured perpendicular from the sole external surface to the sole internal surface, that is constant from the strikeface bottom to the cascading sole portion;

a top rail opposite the sole, extending between the heel region and the toe region, and coupling the strikeface high region with the rear;

wherein an internal surface of the strikeface, an internal surface of the rear, the internal surface of the sole, and an internal surface of the top rail define a closed internal cavity;

the rear upper region comprises a rear wall, a top wall, and a back wall;

the back wall has a back wall interior surface comprising a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

a first inflection point defines a junction between the top wall and the back wall where an interior surface of the rear upper region transitions from a concave shape to a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

a crease defines a junction between the rear upper region and rear lower region; and

a hosel transition region disposed in the heel region and extending from the hosel to the strikeface end, the hosel transition region comprising:

a hosel junction bordering the hosel;

a transition junction located intermediate the hosel junction and the strikeface end;

a hollow portion extending from the strikeface end to the transition junction and defining a void in fluid communication with the closed internal cavity;

a solid portion extending from the transition junction to the hosel junction; and

a plurality of ribs disposed in the void of the hollow portion, wherein each rib of the plurality of ribs:

extends from the transition junction and in a direction from the transition junction to the strikeface end:

does not touch the internal surface of the strikeface;

comprises a width, measured in a direction from the top rail to the sole; and

comprises a length, measured in a direction from the transition junction to an end of the ribs nearest the strikeface end, that varies across the length.

11 . The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein:

the rear wall is below and adjacent the top rail, the top wall is below and adjacent the rear wall, and the back wall is below and adjacent the top wall;

the top wall is curved toward the strikeface, away from the top rail such that a top wall interior surface comprises a concave shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

the rear lower region comprises a bottom incline and a lower exterior wall;

the bottom incline is adjacent and below the back wall;

the bottom incline extends from the first inflection point in a direction away from the strikeface;

the bottom incline has a bottom incline interior surface comprising a substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity;

a second inflection point defines the crease formed between the rear upper region and the rear lower region; and

the lower exterior wall is adjacent and below the bottom incline, and adjacent the sole.

12 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the golf club head further comprises:

a third inflection point defining a junction between the bottom incline and the lower exterior wall where the bottom incline interior surface has the substantially flat shape relative to the closed internal cavity changes direction.

13 . The golf club head of claim 11 , further comprises:

a lower angle, measured from between the bottom incline and the lower exterior wall, is less than 180 degrees; and

an inflection angle, measured between the back wall and the bottom incline, is between 95 degrees and 150 degrees.

14 . The golf club head of claim 10 , further comprising a polymer material that at least partially fills the closed internal cavity.

15 . The golf club head of claim 10 , further comprising:

a first aperture located on the toe region configured to receive a toe weight; and

a second aperture located in the hosel configured to receive a tip weight.

16 . The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the toe weight and the tip weight comprise a weight ranging between 2 grams to 7 grams.
