Claims (71)

1. A method, comprising:

at a server including a hardware processor in communication with a database, receiving a search query, the search query including:

one or more search terms,

a list operator appended to the search query utilizing a predetermined character, where the list operator includes a term located within a predetermined list that is specific to a predetermined user and that is only editable by the predetermined user, where the term is associated with a plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list,

a namespace term prepending the list operator that indicates the predetermined user,

a first facet operator, and

a second facet operator;

identifying the plurality of instances of predetermined content associated with the list operator within the predetermined list;

performing a search for the one or more search terms within the plurality of instances of predetermined content in order to generate search results; and

returning the search results, where the search results are ranked according to a geographical proximity to a location of a user, in response to identifying the first facet operator within the search query, and the search results are ranked according to a number of links pointing to each search result, in response to identifying the second facet operator within the search query.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of instances of predetermined content include:

one or more domain names,

one or more URL path prefixes, and one

or more individual URLs.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

one of the plurality of instances of predetermined content includes a domain name, and

the domain name is associated with a distance value, where the distance value indicates that all web pages pointed to by all web pages within the domain name are included within the instance of predetermined content,

where the search for the one or more search terms is performed within all the web pages within the domain name, as well as all the web pages pointed to by all the web pages within the domain name.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the search query further includes a negative list operator, where the negative list operator includes a second term located within the predetermined list, and the second term is prepended with a predetermined character indicating a negativity of the list operator,

the second term is associated with a second plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list, and

the search results are adjusted to remove URLs within the search results that are included within the second plurality of instances of predetermined content.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the predetermined character includes “/” character,

the plurality of instances of predetermined content include one or more domain names, one or more URL path prefixes, and one or more individual URLs,

one of the plurality of instances of predetermined content includes a domain name,

the domain name is associated with a distance value, where the distance value indicates that all web pages pointed to by all web pages within the domain name are included within the instance of predetermined content,

the search for the one or more search terms is performed within all the web pages within the domain name, as well as all the web pages pointed to by all the web pages within the domain name,

the search query further includes a negative list operator, where the negative list operator includes a second term located within the predetermined list, and the second term is prepended with a predetermined character indicating a negativity of the list operator,

the second term is associated with a second plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list, and

the search results are adjusted to remove URLs within the search results that are included within the second plurality of instances of predetermined content.

6. A system, comprising:

a server including a hardware processor in communication with a database that:

receives a search query, the search query including:

one or more search terms,

a list operator appended to the search query utilizing a predetermined character, where the list operator includes a term located within a predetermined list that is specific to a predetermined user and that is only editable by the predetermined user, where the term is associated with a plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list;

a namespace term prepending the list operator that indicates the predetermined user,

a first facet operator, and a

second facet operator;

identifies the plurality of instances of predetermined content associated with the list operator within the predetermined list;

performs a search for the one or more search terms within the plurality of instances of predetermined content in order to generate search results; and

returns the search results, where the search results are ranked according to a geographical proximity to a location of a user, in response to identifying the first facet operator within the search query, and the search results are ranked according to, a number of links pointing to each search result, in response to identifying the second facet operator within the search query.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of instances of predetermined content include:

one or more domain names,

one or more URL path prefixes, and one

or more individual URLs.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein:

one of the plurality of instances of predetermined content includes a domain name, and

the domain name is associated with a distance value, where the distance value indicates that all web pages pointed to by all web pages within the domain name are included within the instance of predetermined content,

where the search for the one or more search terms is performed within all the web pages within the domain name, as well as all the web pages pointed to by all the web pages within the domain name.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein:

the search query further includes a negative list operator, where the negative list operator includes a second term located within the predetermined list, and the second term is prepended with a predetermined character indicating a negativity of the list operator,

the second term is associated with a second plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list, and

the search results are adjusted to remove URLs within the search results that are included within the second plurality of instances of predetermined content.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein: the predetermined character includes a “/” character,

the plurality of instances of predetermined content include one or more domain names, one or more URL path prefixes, and one or more individual URLs,

one of the plurality of instances of predetermined content includes a domain name,

the domain name is associated with a distance value, where the distance value indicates that all web pages pointed to by all web pages within the domain name are included within the instance of predetermined content,

the search for the one or more search terms is performed within all the web pages within the domain name, as well as all the web pages pointed to by all the web pages within the domain name,

the search query further includes a negative list operator, where the negative list operator includes a second term located within the predetermined list, and the second term is prepended with a predetermined character indicating a negativity of the list operator,

the second term is associated with a second plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list, and

the search results are adjusted to remove URLs within the search results that are included within the second plurality of instances of predetermined content.

11. A software program embodied on a server in communication with a database, where the software program is executed by one or more hardware processors of the server to:

receive at the server a search query, the search query including: one or more search terms,

a list operator appended to the search query utilizing a predetermined character, where the list operator includes a term located within a predetermined list that is specific to a predetermined user and that is only editable by the Predetermined user, where the term is associated with a plurality of instances of predetermined content identified within the predetermined list;

a namespace term prepending the list operator that indicates the predetermined user,

a first facet operator, and a

second facet operator;

identify the plurality of instances of predetermined content associated with the list operator within the predetermined list;

perform a search for the one or more search terms within the plurality of instances of predetermined content in order to generate search results; and

return the search results, where the search results are ranked according to a geographical proximity to a location of a user, in response to identifying the first facet operator within the search query, and the search results are ranked according to a number of links pointing to each search result, in response to identifying the second facet operator within the search query.
