Abstract

This description provides an autonomous or semi-autonomous excavation vehicle that is capable of navigating through a dig site and carrying out an excavation routine using a system of sensors physically mounted to the excavation vehicle. The sensors collect any one or more of spatial, imaging, measurement, and location data representing the status of the excavation vehicle and its surrounding environment. Based on the collected data, the excavation vehicle executes instructions to carry out an excavation routine. The excavation vehicle is also able to carry out numerous other tasks, such as checking the volume of excavated earth in an excavation tool and helping prepare a digital terrain model of the site as part of a process for creating the excavation routine.

responsive to determining that the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground surface of the location is within the threshold angle, halt navigation of the EMV.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of instructions further cause the EMV to:

adjust a distribution of pressure in a hydraulic system controlling the tool based on the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground surface of the location; and

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of instructions further cause the EMV to:

responsive to determining that the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground surface of the location exceeds the threshold angle, adjust a distribution of pressuring in a hydraulic system controlling the tool to raise the tool to a shallower depth below the ground surface of the location.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of instructions further cause the EMV to:

responsive to determining that the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground surface exceeds a threshold angle, adjust a distribution of pressure in a hydraulic system controlling the tool to raise the tool above the ground surface; and

navigate the EMV out of the location.

7. An earth moving vehicle (EMV) for moving a volume of material from a site, the EMV configured to:

sensor data collected by one or more sensors mounted to the EMV; and

a distribution of hydraulic pressure in a hydraulic system controlling the tool.

9. The EMV of claim 7 , wherein the set of instructions, when executed, further cause the EMV to:

continuously measure the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground as the EMV navigates to the previous location in the site; and

responsive to determining that the orientation of the EMV relative to the ground surface of the location is within the threshold angle, halt navigation of the EMV.

10. The EMV of claim 7 , wherein the set of instructions, when executed, further cause the EMV to:
